Chapter 13 - The Accounting No One Could Hide Behind

Rebecca insisted that any financial resolution be handled formally.

No kitchen-table repayment.

No family handshake.

No promise that everyone would move on.

Trust counsel calculated the historic losses.

Carter Development negotiated its portion of responsibility for benefits it had retained.

Daniel voluntarily contributed from distributions and certain inherited assets.

Vanessa agreed to return the remaining reserve funds and establish a repayment arrangement for the amount spent.

None of it restored eleven years.

But the numbers finally existed where everyone could see them.

Rebecca received something else she had wanted even more.

A written acknowledgement from the company stating that Walter Carter had improperly used trust assets and that Rebecca had not authorized the transfers.

Daniel asked why that mattered so much.

She looked at him.

“Because I spent ten years thinking I was bad with money.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Dad always told me my trust was smaller because I spent too much in college. Then after he died, everybody treated me like the irresponsible sibling.”

Daniel remembered.

The jokes.

Rebecca’s vacations.

Her expensive divorce.

Walter calling her dramatic.

Daniel had believed the narrative because it was easier than examining the numbers.

“I’m sorry.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“You participated.”

Daniel did not defend himself.

“I know.”

That answer changed something between them.

Not forgiveness.

But direction.

Meanwhile Vanessa made her own decision.

She supplied investigators and company counsel with every email, note, and communication she had retained from James.

She no longer conditioned cooperation on protecting Walter’s reputation or herself.

That mattered too.

When Daniel told Rebecca, she shrugged.

“She should’ve done that from the beginning.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to praise her?”

“No.”

Rebecca studied him.

“You still love her.”

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

Rebecca exhaled.

“Then don’t confuse love with a recommendation.”

The sentence stayed with him.

Daniel could love Vanessa.

Lily could miss Vanessa.

Vanessa could genuinely regret what she had done.

None of those facts required Daniel to restore the marriage.

The final legal and financial exposure was now unavoidable.

The audit committee had completed its report.

Trust counsel had calculated restitution ranges.

James’s role was documented.

Vanessa’s misuse of the reserve had been traced.

The family had reached the point where there were no useful secrets left.

One choice remained private.

May you like

Whether Daniel wanted Vanessa back inside the life they had built.

And for once, no accountant could answer it for him.
