Chapter 12 - What Vanessa Was Trying to Save

Daniel met Vanessa in a therapist’s office eight weeks after the storage-room incident.

Not at home.

Not alone.

They sat at opposite ends of a sofa.

Vanessa looked thinner.

Daniel noticed and resented himself for noticing.

“You want to know why I locked Rebecca in there,” she said.

“I know why.”

“No. You know what happened.”

He waited.

Vanessa clasped her hands.

“When Rebecca came over that morning, she said she’d found the land transfer. She wanted the old records.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

“She found the door.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I knew Box 9 was gone. I knew the money would lead back to me. I thought if she found the other ledgers, she’d accuse me before I could explain.”

Daniel stared at her.

“So you shut the door.”

“I thought I could make her leave.”

“She was inside.”

“I know.”

“You moved the wardrobe.”

Vanessa started crying.

“I panicked.”

Daniel did not rescue her from the sentence.

“You covered Lily’s mouth.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Why?”

“She kept screaming for you.”

“That’s what a terrified child should do.”

Vanessa flinched.

Daniel continued.

“You weren’t protecting Lily. You weren’t protecting me. You were protecting the moment before anyone knew what you had done.”

Vanessa looked up.

“That’s not all.”

“What else?”

“My mother.”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“When she got sick, I had already watched my dad die because he delayed treatment over money. Then Mom’s insurance denied one of the therapies. I had access to an account Walter told me was there to protect your family.”

“And you took it.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You never told anyone.”

“I was going to replace it.”

“With what?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Daniel nodded.

“That’s the problem.”

“I loved her.”

“I know.”

“She was dying.”

“I know.”

“I couldn’t watch it happen.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“And Rebecca lost more than a million dollars because everyone before you also had a reason.”

Vanessa went quiet.

That was the emotional center neither of them could escape.

Walter had reasons.

James had reasons.

Vanessa had reasons.

Each believed urgency converted secrecy into permission.

Daniel leaned back.

“What do you want now?”

Vanessa looked startled.

“My family.”

“Meaning?”

“You. Lily. Home.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn’t an answer.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I want you not to think I’m a monster.”

Daniel looked at her for a long time.

“I don’t.”

Hope flashed across her face.

Then he continued.

“I think you’re someone who did serious harm because you believed your fear was more important than everyone else’s right to choose.”

Vanessa looked down.

That truth hurt more than being called evil.

May you like

Because she could argue with evil.

She could not argue with what she had actually done.
