Chapter 8 - The Decision That Put the Carter Name at Risk

Company counsel advised against informal contact with James Mercer.
Instead they sent a formal preservation request.
Daniel also authorized an independent review of the Carter Development transactions surrounding Walter’s death.
Rebecca supported it.
Vanessa did not.
“If this becomes a board matter, it will leak.”
Daniel looked at her across the breakfast room.
“Maybe.”
“You could destroy the company.”
“Or we could discover it was built on something we need to correct.”
“Your employees didn’t do this.”
“I know.”
That was the part keeping Daniel awake.
Carter Development employed more than four hundred people.
Old wrongdoing could damage lenders, projects, pension contributions, and families who had never heard of Walter’s hidden room.
Accountability could not simply mean detonating everything.
But concealment had already lasted eleven years.
Daniel signed the authorization.
The board’s independent audit committee would be informed.
That decision could not be pulled back quietly.
Vanessa stared at him afterward.
“You chose Rebecca.”
Daniel shook his head.
“This isn’t you versus Rebecca.”
“It always is.”
There was pain beneath the sentence.
Vanessa had spent years feeling that Rebecca considered her an outsider.
Rebecca had.
Daniel had often ignored it because challenging either woman exhausted him.
Now he saw his passivity more clearly.
He had let tension harden until both women treated information as leverage.
Vanessa continued.
“You think she’ll forgive you when this hurts her shares?”
“I’m not asking her to.”
“What about Lily?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Don’t use Lily to stop this.”
Vanessa recoiled.
The same daughter she had silenced in the storage room had become Vanessa’s last emotional argument.
Daniel refused it.
He arranged temporary sleeping space for Vanessa in a family-owned apartment nearby.
Not as punishment.
Because neither of them could pretend the mansion was emotionally safe while the investigation continued.
Vanessa packed quietly.
Before leaving, she stopped beside Lily’s bedroom.
“Can I say goodnight?”
Daniel hesitated.
Lily stood behind him.
She answered herself.
“Not tonight.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
Daniel did not force the child to comfort an adult.
That felt important.
After Vanessa left, Lily asked, “Is she coming back?”
Daniel crouched.
“I don’t know yet.”
“Because of the door?”
“Partly.”
Lily thought carefully.
“She told me there was no door.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“How long have you known?”
“I heard noises before.”
“When?”
“Sometimes at night.”
Daniel froze.
“What noises?”
“Boxes moving.”
The hidden room had not been abandoned.
May you like
Someone had been using it recently.
And Vanessa had not been the only person with access to the mansion.
