Chapter 9 - EVERYONE HAD SOMETHING TO LOSE

The bank did not shut Carter Renovation Group down.

Reality was slower.

Worse in some ways.

The line remained open temporarily, but additional borrowing required approval while the review continued.

Vendors shortened payment terms.

Two subcontractors demanded older invoices be cleared before accepting new work.

Robert postponed three renovation starts.

Rumors spread.

Emma received texts from employees she had known for years.

Some supportive.

Some angry.

One hurt most.

My wife’s due in November too. Hope proving your point is worth it.

Emma deleted three replies before sending nothing.

Marcus found her at the kitchen table staring at the message.

“You didn’t cause this.”

“I helped hide one payment.”

“One.”

“One was enough to teach them I might agree to two.”

He sat beside her.

“That part is yours.”

Emma looked at him.

He continued.

“The rest isn’t.”

The independent review widened.

Khloe’s divorce attorneys requested company records relevant to her financial disclosures.

The bank asked Robert to explain the electronic certification.

Lena’s firm preserved its working files.

Priya prepared Emma for the possibility that people would ask why she had approved an earlier payment if she now claimed later ones were unauthorized.

Emma hated the answer.

Because it was my sister.

Because my mother begged.

Because my father promised.

Because I thought one lie would prevent a larger disaster.

The stair recording became more important, but Priya still refused to treat it like a solution.

“It corroborates pressure,” she said. “It may corroborate assault. It doesn’t explain the books.”

The police investigation into the shove also moved separately.

An officer interviewed Robert and Diane.

Khloe retained counsel.

No dramatic arrest happened.

Emma appreciated that less than she expected.

Part of her wanted one clean moment where a stranger declared who was right.

Instead there were appointments.

Forms.

Questions.

Waiting.

Then Lena called.

“We found something else.”

Emma and Marcus met her after hours.

Lena placed printed timestamps beside the disputed bank certification.

The PDF bearing Emma’s signature had been created at 11:42 p.m. Sunday.

Robert’s computer.

Submitted Monday at 8:06 a.m.

At 8:21, Robert emailed Diane.

Done.

At 8:26, Diane replied.

Does Emma know?

Robert:

She will.

Emma felt cold.

Then Lena placed another page down.

A draft email Robert never sent.

It was addressed to Emma.

I know you don’t agree with how we handled Khloe’s expenses, but the bank package has to go now. We’ll clean it up after renewal.

Emma stared at it.

Marcus said, “He knew.”

Lena nodded.

Priya, joining by speakerphone, said, “We still need to understand motive and scope.”

Emma looked at the timestamps.

The staircase confrontation happened Wednesday.

They had not been trying to persuade her before submitting the certification.

They had been trying to make her agree afterward.

That was different.

And it meant the push was not the beginning of the cover-up.

It was what happened when the cover-up failed.
