Chapter 14 - THE LAST FAVOR THEY ASKED HER TO DO

Three weeks before Emma’s due date, Robert came to Priya’s office for one final discussion.
Diane accompanied him.
Khloe did not.
Robert had accepted that the bank would receive corrected statements.
He had accepted reduced borrowing.
He had accepted outside financial oversight.
The company would survive, but smaller.
Two speculative projects were canceled.
Robert’s planned retirement expansion disappeared with them.
The business he imagined leaving to his daughters would not exist in the same form.
He sat across from Emma.
“There’s one thing I want from you.”
Emma almost smiled.
“Of course there is.”
Robert took it.
“I want you to tell the bank I had permission to use the signature image generally.”
“You did.”
Priya glanced at Emma.
Robert leaned forward.
“That’s all I’m asking.”
“No, it isn’t.”
Emma understood immediately.
If she said Robert had broad permission without explaining limits, he could argue the disputed certification was a misunderstanding rather than unauthorized use.
Robert’s eyes hardened.
“You sent it to me.”
“For vendor approvals.”
“You didn’t write restrictions in the email.”
“Dad.”
Emma rested both hands on her belly.
“If you believed you had permission, why did you write that I wouldn’t approve the statements?”
Robert looked away.
Diane whispered, “Robert.”
He ignored her.
Emma continued.
“Why did you tell Mom I’d find out later?”
Nothing.
“Why did you need me to agree after it was already submitted?”
Robert finally looked at her.
“Because I knew you’d make this exactly what it became.”
“No.”
Emma shook her head.
“You knew I’d say no.”
Robert’s expression shifted.
Not anger.
Defeat.
Diane began crying quietly.
Robert said, “I built that company before you could read.”
“And then you used my name to keep it alive.”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
Emma continued.
“That doesn’t make it mine to hide.”
Robert sat back.
The last favor had failed.
Later that afternoon, Emma signed the final version of her bank statement.
It included everything.
The signature image she had voluntarily sent.
The limits she understood it to have.
The earlier payment she should not have approved.
The forged certification.
The pressure afterward.
No perfect-victim version.
No clean-family version.
Just the record.
Priya transmitted it.
At almost the same hour, Emma authorized release of the full staircase recording to the investigator handling the assault.
She also included a short note.
I do not want special punishment for my sister. I want the incident evaluated accurately.
When Marcus drove her home, Emma leaned her head against the window.
“What happens now?” he asked.
“Things I don’t control.”
He smiled.
“How’s that feel?”
“Terrible.”
He laughed.
She did too.
Then Emma’s phone buzzed.
A message from Khloe.
Mom says you sent everything.
Emma did not reply.
Another appeared.
I’m scared.
Emma stared at it for a long time.
May you like
Then locked the screen.
For once, somebody else’s fear did not become her instruction.
