Chapter 8 - EMMA RESIGNED

Robert called an emergency staff meeting on Monday morning.

Emma was not invited.

She learned about it from Trevor Mills, the operations manager who had worked for the company for twelve years.

He texted:

Are you really quitting?

Emma called him.

“Who said that?”

“Robert.”

“What exactly did he say?”

“That you’re stepping away because of pregnancy complications and family stress.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Neither is true.”

“Then what is?”

She looked at Marcus.

He shook his head once.

Not as an instruction.

A reminder.

Do not improvise.

“I can’t discuss details,” Emma said. “But I’m not on leave, and I didn’t authorize anyone to explain my status that way.”

Trevor was quiet.

“Are we in trouble?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the honest answer.

By afternoon, Priya sent Robert formal notice that Emma disputed the use of her signature and did not consent to representations being made on her behalf.

Then Emma did something she had avoided for weeks.

She resigned.

Not because Robert could fire her.

Not because Diane wanted her gone.

Because remaining finance director while refusing to validate the company’s statements was becoming impossible.

Her resignation cost her six weeks of expected paid maternity leave.

It cost a year-end bonus they had planned to put toward the baby and their mortgage.

It cost her identity.

Emma had joined Carter Renovation Group at twenty-four.

She knew every vendor.

Every insurance renewal.

Every employee birthday.

On Tuesday morning, she woke at 6:15 automatically and reached for a company phone that no longer existed.

She cried in the bathroom before Marcus woke.

Not because she wanted the job back.

Because losing something voluntarily could still hurt.

Khloe responded to the resignation by filing a statement through her divorce attorney claiming Emma’s “personal hostility” had contaminated the family company’s records.

Her husband, Ethan, had been seeking more complete business disclosures after discovering several marital expenses passed through Carter Renovation Group.

Now the divorce dragged the company deeper into scrutiny.

Robert blamed Emma.

Diane blamed Marcus.

Khloe blamed everyone.

Then Front Range Community Bank requested an independent review before deciding whether to continue the company’s line at its current level.

Robert’s fear finally became visible.

He called Emma from an unknown number.

She answered by mistake.

“What did you do?”

Emma nearly hung up.

Instead she said, “I resigned.”

“You triggered a review.”

“No. Something in the financial package triggered a review.”

“You know what happens if they cut our line?”

“Yes.”

“People lose jobs.”

Emma closed her eyes.

There it was again.

The burden handed to the person willing to feel it.

“Then tell the bank the truth.”

Robert breathed hard into the phone.

“You think truth makes payroll?”

“No.”

Emma’s voice stayed steady.

“But my signature doesn’t either.”

Robert hung up.

That night, Lena sent Priya a short email.

Subject: We need to meet tomorrow.

I found the original certification file.

It was created on Robert’s office computer.
