Chapter 10 - THE BANK PAPERWORK CAME FIRST
The major break came from the bank’s own copy of the renewal package.
Emma expected to see the same disputed certification.
She did.
What she did not expect was the date beside the internal financial statements.
They had been finalized five days before the staircase.
Her refusal had already been removed from the process.
Robert had submitted them anyway.
The family meeting had never been about whether Emma would approve the numbers.
It was about getting her to retroactively protect what Robert had already done.
Suddenly three things from the staircase made sense.
Robert standing in the doorway saying, “This can still be handled privately.”
Diane ordering Emma to apologize instead of helping her.
Khloe panicking when Emma said Marcus had the recording.
They were not merely afraid Emma would expose Khloe’s divorce expenses.
They were afraid the recording captured Robert admitting the bank submission already existed.
Lena’s review exposed the second half.
The company’s financial distress was real.
Robert had spent nearly two years shifting payments between accounts, delaying recognition of losses, and using future deposits from new clients to cover older project shortages.
Not a sophisticated criminal empire.
A failing business owner trying to buy one more month.
Then another.
Then another.
Khloe’s personal expenses made the gap worse.
But they did not create it.
Robert had let everyone believe they did.
Diane knew the company was in trouble.
Khloe knew Robert was using her divorce chaos to explain unusual transactions.
Neither knew the full size of the shortfall.
Robert had made himself look passive because passivity gave him cover.
Diane fought.
Khloe exploded.
Emma cleaned up.
Robert decided.
The recording contained the sentence that completed the picture.
Minutes before the shove, Emma had asked:
“Why are you all acting like I already agreed?”
Robert answered:
“Because the bank doesn’t care about your family feelings, Emma. It already has what it needs.”
At the time, Emma thought he meant the company’s normal financial package.
Now she knew.
He meant her signature.
Her false certification.
Her credibility.
Khloe’s expression on the recording changed immediately after he said it.
Even she had looked toward Robert.
“You already sent it?”
Robert had snapped, “Not now.”
That was why Khloe lunged for the phone later.
Not just to hide her own threats.
Because the recording proved that she, too, had learned the forged certification existed before the assault.
Emma sat in Priya’s office reading the review summary.
“So Dad did this.”
Priya shook her head.
“Your father appears to have initiated the unauthorized certification.”
She tapped the report.
“Your mother helped pressure you. Your sister assaulted you. You approved one earlier questionable payment. Different conduct. Different responsibility.”
Emma nodded slowly.
That distinction mattered.
Marcus sat beside her.
“What happens now?”
Priya looked at Emma.
“The bank wants a sworn statement.”
Emma knew what that meant.
If she told the full truth, she had to include her own twenty-thousand-dollar approval.
If she left it out and someone else found it, she would look exactly like the family she was accusing.
Emma stared at the signature Robert had stolen.
Then at the payment she had chosen to approve.
“All of it,” she said.
