Chapter 9 - When the Secret Left the Family
Sarah's name was not on the old inspection reports.
It appeared somewhere more recent.
Whitmore Industrial's outside accountants contacted her after federal contract auditors requested records tied to family-member reimbursements and related-party expenses.
Among them were payments associated with Sophie's medical care.
Ethan felt sick when his attorney explained the issue.
Sarah had asked Claire to help.
Claire had routed some expenses through a company wellness and executive-benefits account.
Sarah had signed reimbursement forms.
Nothing yet proved criminal intent.
But Sarah had participated in reporting expenses she knew were personal.
The secret was no longer confined to the marriage.
Whitmore's board placed Sarah on temporary leave from her advisory position.
Claire stopped answering her calls.
Their mother blamed Ethan.
Megan blamed Claire.
Sophie blamed herself.
That was the part Ethan could not tolerate.
One evening she asked him whether her medicine had “made Sarah lose her job.”
Ethan crouched beside her.
“No.”
“Because Sarah said I cost too much.”
“You didn't cause any of this.”
Sophie stared at the floor.
“Then why was she mad at me?”
Ethan had no clean answer.
Children often suffered most from truths adults had made complicated.
He scheduled Sophie with the hospital's child-life counselor and arranged his own therapist appointment for the following week.
He had spent years believing endurance was the same thing as strength.
He was beginning to suspect it was sometimes just fear wearing respectable clothes.
Then Claire finally contacted him.
Not by email.
Through attorneys.
Her counsel alleged that Ethan's field notebooks could have been altered after he left the Army and warned against making defamatory claims.
The attack was predictable.
What Ethan did not expect was the attachment included with the letter.
A copy of one of his own old expense reports.
At the bottom was his signature.
Approving receipt of the disputed equipment.
