Chapter 5 - The Marriage Sarah Never Fully Explained

Ethan's attorney advised him not to make accusations he could not prove.

So he didn't.

For the next week, he focused on Sophie.

He arranged temporary transportation to kindergarten.

He changed the emergency contacts at her school.

He notified her pediatric hematology team that Sophie was staying at Megan's address for the time being.

And he stopped sharing Sophie's daily medical updates with Sarah.

Sarah reacted to that last boundary immediately.

“She lives with me too.”

“She lived with us.”

“Don't play word games.”

“I'm not.”

She went quiet.

Their marriage had been strained for months before the birthday.

Sarah complained Ethan's life revolved around Sophie.

Ethan accused Sarah of treating parenting like an inconvenience.

Neither accusation was entirely fair.

Sarah had driven Sophie to appointments when Ethan couldn't leave work.

She had once slept all night in a hospital chair during a bad reaction to medication.

She had paid for a specialized home air-filtration system without being asked.

That history made what she had done harder to understand.

Then Megan found something.

While gathering Sophie's school insurance forms, she noticed the air-filtration invoice had been billed through Whitmore Industrial Systems.

Not Sarah personally.

Ethan asked Sarah about it.

She finally agreed to meet at a coffee shop in Tysons Corner.

“You want the truth?” she said. “Claire paid for it.”

“Why?”

“Because I asked her.”

“With company money?”

Sarah looked away.

“I don't know how she categorized it.”

“Sarah.”

“She was helping my family.”

“No. She was putting my daughter's medical expenses through a federal contractor.”

Sarah's eyes flashed.

“You think I cared what account it came from when Sophie couldn't breathe without coughing?”

For once, Ethan had no immediate answer.

Sarah leaned closer.

“You see villains everywhere now because of what happened in the Army.”

“No,” he said quietly. “I see paperwork.”

She recoiled.

He continued.

“And Claire has spent two months asking where my paperwork is.”

Sarah's expression gave him his answer before her mouth did.

“She thought you kept the originals.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You knew she was searching for them.”

Sarah whispered, “I thought she just wanted to know what you had.”

“That's the same thing.”

May you like

“No, it isn't.”

But even Sarah no longer sounded convinced.
