Chapter 10 - The Signature Ethan Had Never Seen
Ethan knew the signature immediately.
It was his.
Not forged.
Not copied.
His.
The memory returned slowly.
Twelve years earlier, after he refused to certify the equipment as compliant, his battalion executive officer had ordered him to sign a temporary receipt acknowledging physical delivery.
Ethan had signed.
He had written a handwritten limitation beside his name:
RECEIPT ONLY—SAFETY ACCEPTANCE PENDING.
On Claire's copy, the limitation was gone.
The lower margin had been cropped.
That explained three things Ethan had never connected.
Why his career had collapsed so quickly after the complaint.
Why Colonel Sloan had asked whether he still had original notebooks.
And why Claire cared desperately about his field case rather than merely his testimony.
His notes were not just evidence against Whitmore.
They were evidence that the Army's own administrative record had been altered.
But the larger twist came from Sarah.
She arrived at Megan's house that evening with her attorney's permission to speak only about family matters.
She looked exhausted.
“I need to tell you why Claire knew about the case.”
Ethan waited.
Sarah sat down.
“My father told her.”
“Your father died before we met.”
“Yes.”
“He knew my name?”
Sarah nodded.
Her father had kept a private list of officers connected to the 2014 dispute.
Years later, when Sarah began dating Ethan, Claire saw his name and confronted their father.
He told her Ethan had been “the officer who tried to ruin the company.”
Sarah did not learn any of this until after their wedding.
Claire had recognized Ethan immediately.
She had remained silent.
Then, after their father died, Claire found the old list.
And two months earlier, when the new contract audit began, she told Sarah everything.
Ethan stared at his wife.
“You've known for two months.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of telling me—”
“I panicked.”
“You searched my things.”
Sarah looked down.
“Yes.”
“You used Sophie.”
Tears came, but Ethan felt no relief seeing them.
“Yes.”
