Chapter 14 - Sarah's Last Chance
Sarah met Claire at their mother's house in McLean.
Ethan was not there.
He learned what happened later from Sarah and, separately, through her attorney.
Claire asked Sarah to withdraw her cooperation.
She reminded Sarah of the commercial loan.
Their mother's retirement.
The employees.
The family's name.
Then Claire used the argument that had controlled Sarah for months.
“What happens to you when Ethan leaves anyway?”
Sarah nearly gave in.
That was what she admitted later.
She had already lost the marriage as she knew it.
Sophie did not want to see her.
The house was being sold.
Her Whitmore shares might become nearly worthless.
Cooperating would not restore any of those things.
It would only cost more.
Claire apparently saw the hesitation.
“He hid this from you first,” she said.
Sarah replied, “He did.”
“So why are you destroying your own family for him?”
Sarah's answer was the first thing about the entire disaster Ethan wished Sophie could someday hear.
“I'm not doing it for Ethan.”
Claire laughed.
“Then who?”
“For the kid I blamed because I was too scared to blame myself.”
Sarah left.
The following morning she met with her attorney and completed the requested interview with the contract review team.
She did not exaggerate Claire's behavior.
She did not minimize her own.
She admitted searching Ethan's belongings.
She admitted involving Sophie.
She admitted photographing the envelope and forwarding it.
By then the investigators possessed enough independent records that Sarah was not the case.
She was one witness inside it.
For Ethan, the more important decision came that afternoon.
His attorney asked whether he wanted to pursue an emergency order preventing Sarah from contacting Sophie entirely.
Ethan looked at the paperwork.
He thought about protection.
Then punishment.
They were not always the same thing.
He declined the emergency request.
Instead, he kept the existing supervised-contact boundary and left future contact dependent on Sophie's therapist and Sophie's comfort.
