Chapter 9 - WHEN ROBERT APOLOGIZED TOO
Robert had protected Ethan.
He had also crossed a line.
He knew it.
He asked Ryan to meet.
“I hit Vanessa.”
Ryan nodded.
“I saw.”
“I was furious.”
“I understand.”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
Ryan looked surprised.
Robert continued:
“I want Ethan to grow up believing adults can defend him without losing control.”
Ryan sat quietly.
Robert had already contacted an attorney after Vanessa threatened legal action over the confrontation.
He would not hide what happened.
No heroic rewrite.
No pretending anger automatically justified every action.
Ryan appreciated that.
Then Robert said:
“There’s something else I owe you.”
“What?”
“When Emily died, I judged everything you did.”
Ryan looked at him.
Robert continued.
“You started dating too soon.”
“You moved houses too soon.”
“You let Vanessa touch Emily’s things.”
“I made you feel like every step forward was disloyal.”
Ryan had never expected this conversation.
Robert rubbed his hands together.
“You probably became so afraid of replacing Emily because half the family acted like moving forward meant forgetting her.”
Ryan stared.
The idea hurt because it fit.
Grief had not existed only inside Ryan.
Everyone reinforced it.
Robert preserved Emily.
Ryan preserved Emily.
Eventually Ethan learned that loving Vanessa as a mother figure might hurt everyone.
Then Vanessa exploited the confusion.
Not one person created the family system.
But one child had been expected to navigate it.
Ryan leaned back.
“We all made the word Mom way too important.”
Robert nodded.
“And forgot the kid using it.”
For the first time since the kitchen incident, the two men stopped talking about Vanessa.
