Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY VANESSA WANTED FIRST

Vanessa had wanted a child.

Ryan knew.

Robert did not.

After their wedding, she began fertility treatment.

Three failed cycles.

Then a miscarriage at nine weeks.

Ryan told only his sister.

Vanessa told almost nobody.

Robert’s anger did not disappear.

But the shape of the conflict changed.

Vanessa looked toward the kitchen window.

“Every day I walk into this house and see someone else’s child calling me Mom.”

Robert stared at her.

“That someone else was Ryan’s wife.”

“I know who Emily was.”

“Then say her name like a human being.”

Vanessa flinched.

Ryan stepped between them verbally.

“Robert.”

“No.”

Robert pointed toward the stairs.

“Ethan thinks he has to earn juice in his own house.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You have no idea what it’s like.”

Robert laughed bitterly.

“My daughter is dead.”

The room went silent.

“You think I don’t understand seeing another person standing where someone you loved used to stand?”

Vanessa looked away.

Robert continued.

“The difference is Ethan didn’t put you there.”

That landed.

Ryan sat down.

He admitted something else.

After the miscarriage, Vanessa’s behavior toward Ethan changed.

Small things.

She stopped packing his school lunch.

Then insisted Ryan should do it because Ethan was “his responsibility.”

She removed Ethan’s drawings from the refrigerator to make room for fertility calendars.

She stopped attending his soccer games.

Ryan noticed.

But every time he confronted her, Vanessa said she was grieving.

He gave her space.

Then excuses.

Then more space.

Robert asked:

“How long has Ethan been treated like a guest here?”

Ryan did not answer.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He has everything he needs.”

Robert’s expression sharpened.

“That wasn’t the question.”

Then Ryan remembered something.

Three weeks earlier Ethan had asked whether his bedroom would still be his if Vanessa ever had a baby.

Ryan laughed and said of course.

He never asked why Ethan wondered.

Now he did.

Robert looked at him.

“You better find out before that boy decides this house already belongs to someone who doesn’t even exist yet.”
