Chapter 10 - WHAT VANESSA MEANT BY “DIFFERENT”
Vanessa finally agreed to mediated counseling with Ryan.
Not reconciliation.
Clarification.
Her first position was simple.
“I never abused Ethan.”
Ryan did not argue over vocabulary.
He described behavior.
“You poured juice over him.”
“Yes.”
“You kicked away his chair.”
“Yes.”
“You restricted food.”
“I restricted snacks.”
“You told him groceries I bought didn’t belong to him.”
Vanessa sighed.
“I was angry.”
“You packed his belongings for the basement.”
“For storage.”
“You told him his future sibling would need his room.”
“I said might.”
Ryan watched her reduce each act.
Small enough individually.
That had been the mechanism all along.
Then he asked:
“What did you mean when you told Robert I knew why Ethan gets treated differently?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
She hesitated.
Finally:
“Because you told me he wasn’t mine.”
Ryan frowned.
“He isn’t biologically yours.”
“You said more than that.”
“What?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“After we got married, you told me not to discipline him like a mother because I wasn’t his mother.”
Ryan froze.
He remembered.
One argument.
Vanessa had grounded Ethan after he broke a lamp.
Ryan came home and reversed the punishment without discussing it.
Then, angry, he said:
“You’re not his mother. That decision is mine.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Vanessa continued.
“You wanted me to cook for him.”
“Drive him.”
“Show up.”
“Love him.”
“But the second I made a parenting decision you didn’t like, you reminded me exactly where I stood.”
Three previous clues suddenly changed.
Vanessa refusing lunches.
The phrase your father buys the groceries.
Her obsession with Ethan’s future room.
Ryan had created a hierarchy.
Father decides.
Stepmother assists.
Child receives.
Then he expected Vanessa to perform full motherhood whenever convenient.
It did not excuse her cruelty.
But the resentment had not appeared from nowhere.
Vanessa said:
“You wanted me to be Mom until being Mom gave me authority.”
Ryan looked at her.
“That was wrong.”
Vanessa seemed surprised.
Then he added:
“And none of it gave you the right to punish Ethan for being stuck between us.”
Her expression fell.
