Chapter 6 - Claire Refused to Become the Convenient Wife
The first time Daniel met Owen intentionally, they went to a public park in Oak Brook.
Lauren chose it.
Claire did not attend.
Daniel had asked if she wanted to.
Claire had answered honestly.
“Not yet.”
Owen brought a baseball glove even though Daniel had never told anyone baseball had been his favorite sport as a kid.
Evelyn had told him.
That irritated Daniel more than it should have.
The meeting itself was painfully ordinary.
Owen liked grilled cheese without crust.
He hated math homework.
He loved dinosaurs.
He talked too loudly when nervous.
He asked Daniel whether he had ever broken a bone.
Daniel said yes.
Owen asked whether Daniel had wanted him when he was a baby.
That question nearly ended the afternoon.
Daniel crouched beside the picnic table.
“I didn’t know you were here.”
Owen frowned.
“Grandma Evelyn said you did.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What exactly did she say?”
“That you were too young.”
Lauren looked horrified.
“I never told him that.”
Daniel did not correct the entire family history in the park.
He simply told Owen, “I would have wanted to know you.”
The boy nodded.
It was enough for that day.
At home, Claire listened while Daniel described the meeting.
She smiled at the story about dinosaurs.
Then Daniel mentioned Owen calling Evelyn Grandma.
Claire’s smile disappeared.
“Your mother already gave herself a role.”
“Yes.”
“Before you even knew he existed.”
“Yes.”
“And now she expects me to what? Catch up?”
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I don’t know.”
Claire stood.
“That’s becoming a problem.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“I want you to stop assuming I’ll adapt faster because I’m the reasonable one.”
He looked at her.
Claire’s voice shook for the first time.
“Your mother tried to frame me as a thief so she could clear the room for your ex and your son.”
“I know.”
“Your father helped.”
“I know.”
“And now every conversation is about how you lost seven years.”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
Claire continued.
“You did lose seven years. That’s terrible. But I lost something too.”
“What?”
“The marriage I thought I was in.”
That landed.
Claire walked toward the stairs, then stopped.
“I’m not leaving.”
Daniel looked up.
“But I won’t become Owen’s instant stepmother because everyone else decided he belongs inside our marriage.”
“I would never ask that.”
“You already keep saying ‘our son problem’ when he isn’t my son.”
Daniel felt shame burn through him.
Claire softened slightly.
“I’ll support you being his father.”
She paused.
“But you need to let me decide what I become.”
That evening, Daniel called Lauren.
He set new boundaries.
No Evelyn at visits.
No calling him “Dad” in ways designed by adults.
No discussion of Claire with Owen.
Lauren agreed immediately.
Then Daniel called his mother.
Evelyn did not.
“He’s my grandson.”
“He’s a child you used to manipulate my marriage.”
“I tried to give him his family.”
Daniel’s voice went quiet.
“You tried to choose his family for him.”
Evelyn hung up.
An hour later, Robert called.
“Your mother is devastated.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“Good.”

Then Robert said, “You’re blaming her for something I started.”
For the first time, Daniel heard fear in his father’s voice.
