Chapter 5 - The Truth Claire Couldn’t Pretend Was Small

The DNA results came six days later.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent.

Daniel read the sentence three times.

Then once more.

He was Owen’s father.

He sat in the parking lot outside the laboratory for nearly twenty minutes before calling anyone.

Lauren answered first.

“It’s confirmed.”

She started crying.

Daniel did not know what to say.

Congratulations felt obscene.

I’m sorry covered too little.

Eventually Lauren whispered, “I never lied to Owen about you.”

Daniel stared through the windshield.

“What does that mean?”

“He knew your name. He knew you were his biological father. He called you Dad because Evelyn encouraged it.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His mother.

Not Lauren.

“When did she start seeing him?”

“Last year.”

The timeline struck him immediately.

Robert had told Daniel Evelyn found out recently.

A year was not recently.

“How?”

“Evelyn found one of Robert’s payments.”

“And instead of telling me…”

“She contacted me.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What did she want?”

“At first? To meet Owen.”

“And later?”

Lauren hesitated.

“She started talking about you.”

“What about me?”

“That you were unhappy.”

Daniel laughed once.

“That’s interesting. I wasn’t aware.”

“She said Claire had pulled you away from the family. That you regretted marrying someone who didn’t want children.”

Daniel went still.

Claire had wanted children.

They had stopped trying after two painful miscarriages and a year of medical appointments that had slowly turned intimacy into a schedule.

They had told almost no one the details.

Evelyn knew enough to weaponize the silence.

Lauren continued.

“I told her I wasn’t interested in getting back together with you.”

“Did she listen?”

“No.”

Daniel drove home with the paternity report on the passenger seat.

Claire was in the sunroom working on design plans.

He handed her the paper.

She read it.

Her eyes closed for one second.

Then she put the report down carefully.

“So he’s yours.”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

Daniel sat opposite her.

“I want to know him.”

“I know.”

“I’m not asking you for permission.”

Her face tightened.

“I know that too.”

“But I am asking how we do this without destroying us.”

Claire looked at him for a long time.

“You don’t get to promise that.”

“What?”

“That it won’t destroy us.”

Daniel stared.

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“You have a seven-year-old son you were robbed of knowing. You should have a relationship with him. But I’m allowed to admit I don’t know what that means for me.”

Daniel reached for her hand.

She let him take it.

For now.

Then Claire said something that pulled his attention back to the mansion.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you about that day.”

Daniel waited.

“I knew Lauren was upstairs before your mother dumped my purse.”

“How?”

“I saw a child’s jacket on the stair rail. I went looking.”

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“I heard Lauren arguing with Robert in the upstairs hall.”

“About what?”

“Letters.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What letters?”

May you like

Claire looked directly at him.

“Lauren told your father she still had proof he kept you from getting them.”
