Chapter 10 - What Evelyn Had Actually Been Trying to Hide

The major break came from Robert.

Not willingly.

Not at first.

He asked Daniel to meet privately at the Hinsdale house.

Daniel refused unless Claire attended.

Robert reluctantly agreed.

Evelyn was not supposed to be there.

She came anyway.

The four of them sat in the same dining room where the bracelet had appeared.

Claire chose a different chair.

Daniel noticed.

Robert looked exhausted.

“I need you to understand your mother didn’t know about Owen from the beginning.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“You said that already.”

“I knew.”

“For seven years.”

“Yes.”

Claire watched Evelyn.

She showed no surprise.

Daniel turned toward her.

“When did you find out?”

Evelyn answered immediately.

“Last year.”

Robert looked at her.

That tiny movement told Claire everything.

“You’re lying,” Claire said.

Evelyn’s eyes flashed.

“Excuse me?”

Claire looked at Robert.

“When?”

Robert rubbed both hands over his face.

“Four years ago.”

Daniel stared.

Four years.

The year he married Claire.

Evelyn stood.

“Robert.”

He ignored her.

“She found the Hawthorne payments.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You knew when I got married?”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“I found out weeks before the wedding.”

Claire felt her stomach drop.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“You were about to marry her.”

Claire’s chair scraped slightly as she shifted.

There it was.

Not Owen.

Not Lauren.

Her.

Evelyn continued.

“You were finally stable. The company was expanding. We had three hundred people coming to that wedding.”

Daniel stared at her.

“So you helped Dad keep my son hidden because the timing was inconvenient?”

“I protected you from chaos.”

“No. You protected the wedding.”

“I protected the family.”

Claire spoke.

“And four years later you planted a bracelet in my purse.”

Evelyn’s head snapped toward her.

“I did no such thing.”

Robert closed his eyes.

Daniel caught it.

“Dad?”

Robert said nothing.

Daniel stood.

“What did she do?”

Evelyn moved toward him.

“Daniel, sit down.”

He stepped away.

Robert finally looked at Claire.

“I’m sorry.”

The apology confirmed more than a confession could have.

Claire felt her face grow hot.

“You knew.”

Robert nodded.

Daniel looked between them.

“Why?”

Robert’s answer changed the meaning of the entire afternoon.

“Because Lauren contacted your mother three months ago and said she was done keeping quiet.”

Daniel stared.

Robert continued.

“She wanted to tell you herself.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“So you invited her here?” Daniel asked.

“I wanted to control the conversation.”

Claire understood before Daniel did.

“You wanted me gone first.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Claire continued.

“If Daniel came home and found me accused of stealing from you, then found Lauren upstairs with his son, you thought he’d already be angry at me.”

Robert looked away.

Daniel’s face changed.

The bracelet.

Robert’s demand that Claire apologize.

Evelyn’s insistence that Claire leave.

Lauren waiting upstairs.

None of it had been spontaneous.

It was staging.

Evelyn had tried to rewrite Daniel’s past by first poisoning his present.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You weren’t trying to reunite me with my son.”

May you like

He finally understood.

“You were trying to decide who I blamed before I learned what you did.”
