Chapter 13 - Robert Finally Chose Which Lie to Stop Carrying
The bracelet accusation still lacked formal proof.
Claire had her certainty.
Daniel had Robert’s apology.
But Evelyn continued denying she had planted it.
That mattered less criminally than emotionally, but Daniel refused to let the event remain ambiguous.
Then Robert made a choice.
He arrived at Daniel’s attorney’s office carrying his phone.
No dramatic entrance.
No lawyer beside him.
He looked tired.
“I’m done.”
Daniel did not invite him to sit.
Robert unlocked the phone and opened a message thread with Evelyn from the afternoon of the lunch.
The attorney photographed and preserved the exchange properly.
The messages were short.
Evelyn: Lauren is here. Keep Daniel downtown until three.
Robert: He said he may finish early.
Evelyn: Then Claire needs to be gone before he gets here.
Several minutes later:
Evelyn: Bracelet is in her bag.
Robert: Evelyn, don’t.
Evelyn: You want Daniel listening to Claire when Lauren comes downstairs?
Robert had replied:
Just don’t let this get out of control.
Daniel read that sentence twice.
His father had not planned the slap.
He had not stopped the setup either.
Robert looked at Claire.
“I should’ve stopped her.”
Claire said nothing.
“I should’ve told Daniel about Owen years ago.”
Still nothing.
Robert turned to his son.
“I thought if I controlled enough variables, nobody would get hurt badly enough to matter.”
Daniel’s voice was flat.
“That sounds like something you’ve told yourself for a long time.”
Robert nodded.
He also provided access to the Hawthorne Family Services payment records and confirmed he had directed his chief of staff to block Lauren’s communications during Daniel’s London assignment.
The records were forwarded to the independent corporate investigators where relevant.
Harper Development’s board did not immediately fire Robert.
Real organizations did not resolve thirty years of leadership over one weekend.
But he was placed on temporary administrative leave while the board reviewed his use of company resources for personal interference.
Daniel took no pleasure in it.
He also refused Robert’s private settlement involving Owen.
If Robert wanted to contribute to his grandson’s future, that could be discussed openly later, with legal advice and no conditions.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Lauren submitted a proposed gradual parenting arrangement through their attorneys.
Short visits first.
Then longer Saturdays.
No overnight schedule until Owen had adjusted.
A child therapist helped guide the transition.
Claire remained outside the formal parenting arrangement.
By her choice.
Not Evelyn’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Hers.
Then Robert asked Daniel one final question before leaving the attorney’s office.
“Will you ever let me see Owen?”
Daniel looked at him.
“That isn’t mine to promise.”
Robert nodded.
