Chapter 3 - What Nora Asked for on the Third Night

Nora refused to discuss the hospital while Ethan was angry enough to frighten Lily.
That request almost made him angrier.
Then he looked down at his daughter.
He put Lily in her crib and turned on the monitor.
They moved downstairs.
Nora sat at the far end of the kitchen table.
“I wasn’t trying to abandon her.”
“Then explain it.”
Lily’s birth had been harder than Ethan remembered.
Not medically catastrophic.
Just exhausting in ways he had not understood.
Nora had labored for twenty-seven hours before an emergency C-section. Lily had trouble feeding. Nora developed a fever and remained hospitalized longer than expected.
Ethan remembered being tired.
He had slept four hours at a time.
Nora had barely slept at all.
On the third night, she began crying and could not stop.
“I kept thinking I was going to hurt her by doing something wrong,” Nora said. “Not intentionally. I was terrified I’d fall asleep holding her. I thought I’d drop her. Every sound she made felt like proof I was failing.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Ethan frowned.
Nora looked directly at him.
“Your mother told me you had already said you couldn’t handle it.”
“I never said that.”
“I know that now.”
Ethan’s breathing slowed.
Nora explained that Marlene had visited while Ethan drove home to shower and collect baby supplies.
Nora had been exhausted, medicated for pain, and crying.
Marlene told her Ethan was overwhelmed.
Then she said something worse.
“She told me you’d said maybe we’d made a mistake having a baby.”
Ethan stood abruptly.
“I never—”
“I know.”
Nora had asked a nurse for help.
A hospital social worker came.
Nora asked what happened if a mother became too overwhelmed to care safely for a newborn.
The social worker discussed postpartum support, family help, crisis resources, and safe-placement options because hospital staff were required to answer honestly.
Nora never signed away custody.
She never requested adoption.
She agreed to an evaluation and accepted help.
“Then why was Mom holding that over you?”
Nora’s eyes filled.
“Because she heard part of the conversation.”
“And?”
“She told me if you ever found out what I asked, you’d never trust me alone with Lily.”
Ethan stared at her.
“That still doesn’t explain eleven thousand dollars.”
Nora wiped her cheek.
“No.”
“What did she threaten you with?”
May you like
Nora finally answered.
“She threatened to make you believe I had wanted Lily gone.”
