Chapter 10 - Marlene Had Created the Story She Later Sold Back to Nora
The full hospital notes changed everything.
Marlene had approached a nurse while Ethan was gone.
She told staff Nora was “rejecting the baby.”
She said Nora had questioned whether becoming a mother had been a mistake.
Some of that was technically true.
Nora had cried.
She had expressed fear.
But the notes showed Marlene presented those statements as evidence that Nora might leave Lily behind.
Then the social worker met Nora.
Nora denied wanting to abandon Lily.
She asked for help because she feared she could not cope safely without support.
She accepted a postpartum mental-health referral.
She requested another night in the hospital if insurance allowed it.
Most importantly, the assessment documented that Nora repeatedly asked when Ethan would return.
Ethan sat at the kitchen table reading every line.
His mother had first told Nora that Ethan regretted the baby.
Then she told hospital staff Nora might abandon Lily.
Then she kept one page containing Nora's frightened question.
Later she used that page to make Nora believe Ethan would see her as an unfit mother.
Three clues suddenly meant something different.
Marlene’s hospital comment to Lily.
The carefully preserved document.
The monthly cash payments.
This had never been about protecting Ethan from a terrible secret.
The secret had been manufactured from a vulnerable moment.
Nora had still chosen to pay.
She had still lied.
But the power dynamic was now unmistakable.
Marlene had created the fear she later monetized.
Ethan called Callie.
His sister listened without interrupting.
Then she said, “There’s something else.”
After Lily’s birth, Marlene had told Callie that Nora was “unstable.”
She warned Callie not to mention it because Ethan might panic.
Callie had believed her.
Ethan closed his eyes.
His mother had not simply manipulated one person.
She had distributed different pieces of the same story so no one compared notes.
That evening Marlene arrived at the house despite being told not to.
She stood outside the locked door.
Ethan watched her through the glass.
“You cannot keep me from my granddaughter.”
Ethan did not open it.
Marlene raised her voice.
“I was trying to save you from that woman.”
