Chapter 12 - What Marlene Was Actually Afraid of Losing

The confrontation happened in a lawyer’s conference room in DuPage County.

No baby.

No shouting crowd.

No dramatic ambush.

Just four adults and two attorneys.

Marlene looked immaculate.

Pearl earrings.

Cream jacket.

Perfect hair.

She did not look like a woman who had ever been frightened by anything.

Ethan placed the hospital records on the table.

“You told staff Nora wanted to leave Lily.”

“I told them she was unstable.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Marlene looked at Nora.

“She was crying constantly.”

“She had just had surgery,” Ethan said.

“She was weak.”

Nora spoke for the first time.

“So you scared me more.”

Marlene’s mouth tightened.

“I told you reality.”

“You told me Ethan regretted having Lily.”

Marlene looked at her son.

Ethan waited.

His mother finally said, “You were exhausted.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“You were losing yourself.”

“To fatherhood?”

“To her.”

There it was.

The real fear.

Marlene accused Nora of slowly pulling Ethan away.

First from weekly dinners.

Then holidays.

Then family vacations.

Then from the house Marlene wanted them to buy nearby.

When Lily arrived, Marlene believed she had become optional.

“You barely called me,” she said.

Ethan stared.

“So you punished my wife?”

“I protected my relationship with my son.”

“You blackmailed her.”

“I kept her from destroying your family.”

Nora let out one bitter laugh.

“You made me pay you every month.”

Marlene looked at her.

“You could've told him anytime.”

Nora went quiet.

That was true.

Marlene knew it.

Ethan did too.

But then Ethan said:

“And you knew she was ashamed enough not to.”

Marlene finally looked uncertain.

Ethan slid a written notice across the table.

Marlene was no longer permitted unsupervised contact with Lily.

No entering their home.

No daycare pickup.

No medical access.

No keys.

No exceptions.

Marlene looked at the paper.

“You're choosing her.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I’m choosing my daughter.”

May you like

Marlene’s face hardened.

And Ethan realized she still saw those as two different choices.
