Chapter 11 - Ethan Could Not Blame Only His Mother

Cutting Marlene off was easy compared with deciding what to do about Nora.
Ethan loved his wife.
He also no longer trusted her automatically.
That distinction hurt.
They began couples counseling.
On the second session, Ethan said what he had been avoiding.
“If I hadn't found that bag, how long would you have kept paying her?”
Nora took several seconds.
“I don't know.”
The answer angered him.
It also sounded honest.
The therapist asked Ethan another question.
“If Nora had told you three months ago that your mother was blackmailing her, what would you have done?”
“I would've believed her.”
Nora looked at him.
The therapist waited.
Ethan revised his answer.
“I want to think I would have.”
That was different.
Nora described years of small incidents when Ethan defended Marlene first.
Ethan described how deeply betrayed he felt that his wife had hidden debt and allowed his mother access to Lily despite knowing she was manipulative.
Neither was allowed to flatten the story into one guilty person and one innocent person.
Marlene had done the most deliberate harm.
Nora had responded with secrecy.
Ethan had created a marriage where his mother’s approval occupied too much space.
All three choices had consequences.
Meanwhile, Lily changed in ordinary ways.
She learned to clap.
She began pulling herself upright against the sofa.
She laughed when Ethan sneezed.
Those moments made the adults' secrets feel smaller and more shameful.
One afternoon Nora found Ethan putting Lily’s stuffed rabbit into the washing machine.
He had retrieved it from the trash the day of the confrontation.
“She still sleeps with that thing?” Nora asked.
“Every night.”
Nora touched one worn ear.
“I should've stopped your mother sooner.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Yes.”
Nora nodded.
No excuses.
Later that week, their attorney called.
Marlene had hired counsel.
Her lawyer offered to return some of the money if Ethan and Nora agreed not to “defame” her within the family.
Ethan almost laughed.
Nora didn’t.
“She still thinks this is about reputation.”
Ethan looked at Lily crawling across the rug.
“No.”

He finally understood what consequence would matter most to his mother.
“This is about access.”
