Chapter 6 - THE SISTER WHO CALLED IT KEEPING THE PEACE

Caroline Parker met Emily at a coffee shop.

She looked exhausted before either spoke.

“You think I was spying on you.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Michael about my panic attack?”

Caroline looked down.

That was answer enough.

Emily’s anger rose.

“You promised me that was private.”

“He asked whether you were okay.”

“You told him I had a panic attack.”

“I thought he should know.”

“Why?”

“He’s your husband.”

“He was the reason I was panicking.”

Caroline winced.

“I didn't understand how bad things were.”

Emily stared at her.

“You knew he was threatening custody.”

“I knew you two said ugly things when you fought.”

“No. He said legal things. I believed them because he sounded like he knew.”

Caroline rubbed her forehead.

Then admitted something worse.

Michael had been calling her after fights for nearly a year.

He described Emily as unstable.

Caroline believed some of it.

When Emily later called crying, Caroline interpreted the emotion as confirmation.

She thought she was helping both sides.

She was actually becoming a feedback loop.

Michael said Emily was unstable.

Emily became distressed by Michael.

Caroline saw distress.

Caroline told Michael.

Michael documented it.

Round and round.

“Why didn't you tell me he was keeping notes?” Emily asked.

Caroline’s eyes filled.

“I thought it was for counseling.”

“There was no counseling.”

“I know that now.”

Emily sat back.

Caroline had not conspired to take Ethan.

She had done something more ordinary.

Protected her brother’s interpretation because it was familiar.

Their father had been strict.

Their mother avoided conflict.

Michael grew up believing emotional control was maturity.

Caroline learned to translate his harshness into concern.

“He gets scared when he thinks people are leaving,” she said.

Emily looked at her.

“That explains him.”

“Yes.”

“It does not excuse him.”

Caroline nodded.

For once, she did not argue.

Then she handed Emily something.

A printed email Michael sent her two months earlier.

Subject:

If Emily finally walks.

Inside, he wrote:

Let her go. Do not chase her. I need the first night documented cleanly.

Emily’s fingers went cold.

Michael had not merely threatened what he would do if she left.

He had been planning how to use the moment when she finally did.
