Chapter 12 - WHAT ROBERT WANTED VERSUS WHAT EMILY NEEDED
Robert wanted Michael punished.
Not legally beyond the facts.
Emotionally.
He wanted Emily to seek sole custody.
Wanted Michael exposed to every relative.
Wanted Ethan kept away until Michael “earned” him back.
Emily understood.
Robert had arrived in time to see his daughter against the sofa with a belt raised over her.
That image did not leave him.
But Emily refused.
“Ethan loves his father.”
“He was terrorizing you.”
“He threatened me. Not Ethan physically.”
“That matters?”
“Yes.”
Robert stared at her.
“You're defending him.”
“No. I’m distinguishing.”
Rachel had taught her the word.
Behavior.
Evidence.
Risk.
Not revenge.
The evaluator recommended Emily become primary residential parent for school purposes, with significant parenting time for Michael.
No unsupervised overnight restrictions were recommended long-term because Michael had never harmed Ethan physically and had demonstrated behavioral change.
Robert hated it.
Emily accepted it.
Then she confronted her father.
“You protected me that night.”
“I’d do it again.”
“I know.”
“But?”
“But I need you to stop treating every contact Michael has with Ethan like a betrayal of me.”
Robert looked stunned.
Emily continued.
“If I teach Ethan that loving his father hurts Grandpa, I’m doing another version of what Michael did.”
Robert sat down.
That silenced him.
The family drama had created many opportunities for people to recruit Ethan into adult loyalty.
Emily decided the cycle ended with her.
Robert eventually nodded.
“I don't have to like Michael.”
“No.”
“I probably never will.”
“You don't.”
“But I can stop making Ethan know that every five minutes.”
Emily smiled sadly.
“That would help.”
The protective father had to learn a difficult version of protection too.
