Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME MICHAEL TRIED TO TELL HER WHAT SHE WOULD LOSE
The divorce settlement meeting took place thirteen months after the belt hit the floor.
Most issues were resolved.
House proceeds.
Retirement accounts.
Furniture.
Debts.
Child support.
One disagreement remained.
Michael wanted Ethan to stay in the same private elementary school.
Tuition was expensive.
Emily could not afford half comfortably.
Michael offered to pay all of it.
Rachel warned that financial control could re-enter through generosity.
Emily asked Michael:
“If you pay, are you expecting final say on school decisions?”
“No.”
“Trips?”
“No.”
“Activities?”
“No.”
“Then put that in writing.”
Michael looked irritated.
The old Michael would have said:
If I’m paying, I decide.
Instead he took a breath.
“Fine.”
Then, perhaps out of habit, he added:
“You know he’ll lose his friends if you say no.”
Emily stared.
Michael heard himself.
He closed his eyes.
“Sorry.”
“What were you about to do?”
“Make the consequence your fault.”
“Yes.”
He looked ashamed.
“I still do it.”
“Yes.”
“Less.”
Emily almost smiled.
“Less.”
They agreed on school.
Then Michael asked something unexpected.
“Do you regret leaving?”
Emily thought carefully.
“I regret that it took what happened in the living room.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“No.”
She looked directly at him.
“I don't regret leaving.”
He absorbed it.
There was pain.
No anger.
Then he said:
“I used to think if you left, I’d lose.”
Emily remembered the courthouse envelope.
The belt.
The threats.
“You did lose something.”
“You.”
“Yes.”
Michael nodded.
He did not tell her that meant she had destroyed the family.
He did not say Ethan would someday blame her.

For the first time, Emily could tell him the truth without receiving a punishment attached to it.
