Chapter 1 - THE BELT ON THE FLOOR

Michael Parker yanked Emily upright by the arm.
“You embarrassed me. Now pay for it.”
The leather belt rose in his other hand.
Emily twisted free and backed against the sofa.
Her seven-year-old son was somewhere upstairs.
That was the only thing keeping her voice steady.
“Our son is terrified of you.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
Then the front door burst open.
Robert Hayes crossed the living room before Michael could turn.
He knocked the belt from Michael’s hand.
“Stay away from my daughter.”
Michael stared at his father-in-law.
Then laughed.
“You think she’s leaving?”
He snatched a folded legal envelope from the coffee table.
“She’ll never risk losing the boy.”
Robert saw the courthouse seal.
So did Emily.
Her stomach dropped.
Michael had spent weeks telling her that if she left the house, a judge would call her unstable and give him custody.
She had never seen actual paperwork.
Until now.
A small movement appeared on the staircase.
Ethan stood there barefoot in navy pajamas, clutching Emily’s phone.
“Mom?”
Emily turned.
Her son pointed toward the foyer.
Someone was outside.
The bell rang once.
Then the door opened.
A woman’s hand appeared holding another sealed legal packet.
Michael’s smug smile vanished.
Emily looked at him.
“You’re right,” she said.
“I’m not leaving alone.”
The woman stepped inside.
Rachel Kim.
Emily’s attorney.
Michael stared at the second envelope.
“What did you file?”
Rachel did not answer him.
She handed the packet to Emily.
“This is yours.”
Then she looked at Michael.
“And the copy outside is for you.”
Emily broke the seal.
The first page was not a divorce complaint.
It was an emergency request concerning Ethan.

Michael went completely still.
Because Emily had finally stopped believing his version of what family court would do.
