Chapter 19 - THE WITNESS AT THE DOOR

The discovery changed the investigation.

If Rebecca’s body had not been inside the buried car, then the Ashfords’ version of her death was not merely false.

It was incomplete.

Forensic technicians found blood on the passenger seat and strands of Rebecca’s hair near the trunk. They also recovered a broken pearl earring belonging to Marlene.

Marlene was arrested for assault, obstruction and conspiracy.

Noah faced financial crimes, evidence destruction, kidnapping and conspiracy charges. Camille agreed to testify and pleaded guilty to fraud and obstruction.

But none of them explained where Rebecca had gone after leaving the car.

For six weeks, I woke every morning expecting another terrible discovery.

Instead, the company began healing.

The stolen pension money was frozen before it left the country. The board removed Noah and Marlene. I rejected the permanent chief executive position and established an independent employee-elected leadership council.

Ashford Heritage survived.

The family dynasty did not.

Paige returned to school under her middle name. She attended therapy and stopped apologizing whenever she cried.

One evening, we were eating takeout on the floor of our new apartment when someone knocked.

A thin white-haired man stood outside.

He introduced himself as Dr. Samuel Reed, a retired emergency physician from Rhode Island.

“I treated your sister nine years ago,” he said.

I could barely speak.

“You treated Rebecca?”

“She came to my private clinic after midnight with a head injury. She said powerful people were searching for her.”

“Why didn’t you contact the police?”

“She begged me not to.”

He explained that Rebecca remained unconscious for two days. When she woke, she remembered her first name but little else.

A woman from the clinic arranged a protected shelter placement under a new identity.

“Where is she now?”

Dr. Reed removed an envelope from his coat.

“I don’t know. She left the program seven years ago.”

Inside was a photograph taken three months after the crash.

Rebecca sat beside a lake, thinner but unmistakably alive.

Paige covered her mouth.

On the back, Rebecca had written:

Tell Vivian I stayed away because I thought they would hurt her child.

Beneath the sentence was a return address.

The house was only forty minutes away.
