Chapter 15 - WHAT NOAH HAD BURIED

The man in the photograph was Conrad Vale, a private equity broker known for buying distressed American companies through offshore holding groups.
Noah was not only planning to move the pension money.
He intended to sell Ashford Heritage.
Once the funds disappeared and the company collapsed, Conrad’s group would purchase the properties for a fraction of their value. Noah and Marlene would retain private stakes through overseas accounts.
Thousands of employees would lose their retirement savings.
The family would keep its fortune.
At the founders’ dinner, Noah expected me to accept public blame before the transfer occurred.
He did not realize I now controlled enough shares to challenge him.
But control meant nothing if Conrad moved the money first.
Marcus Bell, a federal financial-crimes attorney recommended by George, arranged an emergency call with investigators. The cassette and documents were compelling, but they needed a live transaction or direct admission to act immediately.
“Attend the dinner,” Marcus said. “Let Noah believe his plan is intact.”
Paige objected.
“He hit the wall beside Mom last night. What happens when he realizes she knows everything?”
“I won’t be alone,” I said.
The ballroom would be filled with investors, attorneys, employees and press.
But I remembered Room 814.
Crowds had never stopped the Ashfords from creating private places where truth could disappear.
That afternoon, Evelyn called me from the hotel basement.
“They’re removing the old security archives.”
“Who?”
“Two men Noah hired.”
The original footage from the night Rebecca died had supposedly been destroyed years earlier.
I drove to Ashford Grand with Marcus and two investigators.
We found the archive room empty.
The metal shelves had been cleared.
Fresh tire marks led from the loading dock toward an abandoned Ashford property near the coast.
The property was a half-finished resort Noah’s father had closed after Rebecca’s death.
Behind one building, we found a burn barrel filled with blackened paper and melted videotape.
Most of it was ruined.
But inside a steel maintenance locker, Paige found a hotel security drive wrapped in Rebecca’s green coat.
A label identified the date of her death.
Marcus connected it to his laptop.
The first frame showed Rebecca running through the underground garage.
A second figure followed her.
Not Noah.
May you like
Camille.
And she was carrying a tire iron.
