Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS

Noah took Paige to the Beverly Hills estate where we had lived for fourteen years.

He believed the property belonged to him.

It did not.

During Ashford Heritage’s restructuring, the mansion had been placed under an employee pension trust as collateral. Noah had signed the documents without reading them because he assumed I would always protect him from consequences.

Police surrounded the property while I called the landline.

Noah answered on the fourth ring.

“Withdraw your accusations.”

“Let Paige leave.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“She isn’t leverage.”

His voice cracked.

“You turned her against me.”

“Noah, she heard you.”

“I gave that child everything.”

“You gave her things. That isn’t the same.”

Through an upstairs window, I saw Paige move behind a curtain.

She was alive.

Noah demanded the original cassette, Rebecca’s shares and a written statement accepting responsibility for the missing pension money.

“You know I won’t do that.”

“Then you don’t know how desperate I am.”

“I know exactly how desperate you are. I was married to it.”

The front gate opened unexpectedly.

Evelyn walked up the driveway carrying a paper grocery bag.

Police tried to stop her, but she shouted toward the house.

“Mr. Noah, I brought the medication Paige left at the hotel.”

Paige took no medication.

Noah opened the front door just enough to look outside.

Evelyn threw the bag into his face.

Paige ran down the staircase.

I heard Noah shouting through the phone.

Seconds later, the side door burst open and Paige sprinted across the lawn into an officer’s arms.

Noah remained inside.

He could have surrendered.

Instead, he went to his father’s old office and tried to burn Rebecca’s letters in the fireplace.

The sprinkler system activated before the papers caught.

Police arrested him beneath the family portrait he had always insisted hang above the mantel.

As officers led him outside, he looked at me.

“You would have nothing without my family.”

I looked past him at the mansion.

“The employees own this house, Noah.”

The following morning, excavation began at the coastal resort.

Beneath twelve feet of concrete, they found Rebecca’s car.

The driver’s door was open.

But Rebecca was not inside.
