Chapter 16 - THE BOARDROOM WITHOUT APPLAUSE

Camille arrived at the founders’ dinner in a silver gown.

She stood beside Noah beneath the ballroom chandelier, smiling for photographers as though the missing pension funds were merely an unfortunate rumor.

I watched her hands.

No injuries. No nervous movements.

Only a diamond bracelet Noah had once told me was purchased for a charity auction.

At eight o’clock, Noah walked onto the stage.

“My family has served this company for four generations,” he began. “Tonight, we must address a betrayal from within.”

The ballroom doors opened.

I entered with Paige.

Every conversation stopped.

Noah stared at his daughter, then at me.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

I walked to the stage.

“You invited me to apologize.”

Marlene rose from the head table.

“Vivian, don’t make this worse.”

“I couldn’t possibly.”

Noah tried to take the microphone, but I stepped away.

I told the employees their pension money had been moved through forged authorizations. I explained Hartwell Advisory’s role and Conrad Vale’s planned acquisition.

Then I projected Rebecca’s share certificate onto the ballroom screen.

“With these inherited shares, my existing interest and the restored voting authority of the employee trust, I represent fifty-one percent of Ashford Heritage’s voting power.”

The room remained silent.

There was no applause.

Only the sound of Noah breathing into the microphone.

“You’re lying,” he said.

The ballroom doors opened again.

Federal investigators entered.

Conrad Vale attempted to leave through the kitchen but was stopped by two agents.

Camille backed away from Noah.

I displayed the garage footage.

The image showed her following Rebecca while holding the tire iron.

“I never hit her,” Camille shouted. “I only wanted the documents.”

Noah turned toward her.

“Keep your mouth shut.”

“You told me you’d protect me.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

Camille’s face changed.

In that moment, the mistress finally understood the wife.

Noah had not chosen either of us.

He had chosen himself.

Camille grabbed the microphone.

“Then they should hear what you buried under the coastal resort.”

Noah knocked the microphone from her hand.

May you like

But the ballroom had already heard her.

And so had the investigators.
