Chapter 9 - THE WIDER WORLD DISCOVERED THE BIRTHDAY VIDEO
Richard’s workplace received the video because one of the guests he had invited was a senior executive from the resort.
Not Maya.
Not Julian.
A witness.
Richard had invited business contacts to Lily’s birthday because he wanted the party to double as networking.
That choice brought his conduct into his professional life.
Human resources opened an investigation.
They were especially concerned that several invited clients appeared in a private family video Vanessa had posted without permission and that Richard had used a children’s birthday party to cultivate accounts.
He was placed on leave.
Richard blamed Maya.
“You cost me my job.”
“You’re on leave.”
“Because your billionaire lawyer made one call.”
“Julian didn’t contact your employer.”
Richard laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Maya did.
Because Julian had spent weeks telling her the Waverly family could not use wealth to rewrite process.
The irony was almost funny.
Richard assumed wealthy people operated exactly as he would if given power.
Then another consequence reached Vanessa.
Several guests objected to being posted online.
She deleted the edited clip.
Too late.
Copies existed.
The complete video also became relevant in the family-law case because it showed Lily’s reaction and Richard’s behavior.
Again, the recording did not solve everything.
It documented one event accurately.
Maya’s identity proceeding created wider attention too.
Andrew Waverly released one restrained statement through counsel confirming that evidence suggested Maya was the family member known as Amelia and requesting privacy while the legal process continued.
Maya refused interviews.
Then the old disappearance story returned to newspapers.

Maya hated the headline.
She had not been found.
She had been living.
Working.
Marrying.
Giving birth.
Paying taxes.
Caring for Ruth.
Existing perfectly well without anyone recognizing her ring.
The wording made twenty-seven years of her life sound like a waiting room.
Then the trust accounting produced a complication.
One branch of the Waverly family opposed releasing reserved assets immediately.
Not because they denied Maya’s DNA.
Because Caroline’s disappearance had triggered trust provisions that redistributed certain income temporarily.
Recognizing Maya could require years of financial records to be recalculated.
Money had created the original family fracture.
Now money threatened to define the reunion.
Maya told Julian:
“I want identity settled before distribution.”
He nodded.
“That may be wise.”
