Chapter 12 - RICHARD FINALLY SAID WHY HE DID IT

The central confrontation with Richard happened during a structured mediation session.
Olivia was not invited.
Vanessa was not invited.
No cameras.
No birthday guests.
Richard sat across from Maya.
His employment investigation had ended.
He was not fired solely for the birthday assault. He received a serious disciplinary action and ultimately resigned after the resort reassigned him away from high-profile client development.
He had found another sales position at lower pay.
He hated that fact.
Maya could tell.
The mediator asked:
“What are each of you trying to protect now?”
Maya answered first.
“Lily.”
Then corrected herself.
“And myself.”
Richard looked at her.
The mediator asked him.
“My relationship with my daughter.”
“And?”
Richard leaned back.
“My dignity.”
Maya almost smiled.
At least it was honest.
Richard continued.
“Do you know what it was like being married to someone who never wanted anything?”
Maya frowned.
“I wanted things.”
“No. You wanted little things.”
“A degree. Another child. A husband who didn’t mock my job.”
“You were content carrying plates while everyone around us moved forward.”
There it was.
Richard had never merely disliked Maya’s work.
He had been ashamed of it.
“When I brought colleagues home,” he continued, “I could feel them wondering why I married you.”
Maya stared.
“So you made me smaller before anyone could judge you for choosing me.”
Richard’s expression changed.
He had not expected her to say it that cleanly.
Maya continued.
“And at Lily’s party?”
“You contradicted me in front of Julian.”
“So?”
“I needed that account.”
“You pushed my face into cake because I said I had a job.”
Richard looked down.
“I lost control.”
“You grabbed me twice.”
Silence.
The mediator asked:
“What were you protecting in that moment?”
Richard answered eventually.
“The version of my life I wanted people to see.”
Maya felt something inside her settle.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding without excuse.
Then Richard asked the question he had been circling for months.
“If Julian never recognized that ring, would you have left me?”
Maya thought carefully.
“Maybe not that day.”
His eyes lifted.
“But eventually?”
“I hope so.”
The answer hurt both of them.
May you like
Richard nodded.
For once he did not tell her what she should feel.
