Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING RICHARD WANTED FROM HER

Before finalizing the divorce settlement, Richard asked for one concession.

He wanted Maya to release a joint statement saying the birthday incident had been “a private marital conflict exaggerated by unexpected media attention.”

Maya read the draft.

It was not entirely false.

It had been private.

Media attention had exaggerated parts of the story.

But the sentence was built to make the original act smaller.

She declined.

Richard asked to meet through attorneys.

Danielle agreed.

Richard looked exhausted.

“I’m trying to rebuild my career.”

“I know.”

“Every time someone searches my name, that video comes up.”

“I didn’t post it.”

“I know.”

That answer was new.

Months earlier he blamed Maya for everything connected to the video.

Now he continued.

“I’m not asking you to say I didn’t do it.”

“You’re asking me to package it.”

His jaw tightened.

“People see fourteen seconds and think they know my whole life.”

Maya looked at him.

“They don’t.”

Relief crossed his face.

Then she added:

“But those fourteen seconds happened.”

He looked down.

Maya offered something different.

If directly asked in any legal or professional proceeding, she would describe the incident accurately and would not exaggerate it.

She would also not publicly campaign against him.

That was all.

No revenge.

No false forgiveness.

Richard nodded slowly.

Then he asked:

“Does Lily know about the money?”

“Not really.”

“Are you going to raise her like a Waverly?”

Maya almost laughed.

“I don’t know what that means.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

She leaned forward.

“That’s the whole problem, Richard. Everybody keeps trying to decide what a name means before the person wearing it gets to choose.”

He absorbed that.

The settlement moved forward without the public statement.

The main questions were resolved.

Property.

Parenting.

Support.

Access.

Boundaries.

The final legal paperwork would take additional weeks.

Before leaving, Richard stopped at the conference-room door.

“I really did think nobody was coming to save you.”

Maya looked at him.

“Nobody did.”

He frowned.

“Julian—”

“Recognized a ring.”

She stood.

“I left you myself.”

May you like

Richard had no answer.

That was the last power reversal Maya needed from him.
