Chapter 7 - THE GREENHOUSE MAYA REMEMBERED
Andrew sent one photograph that made Maya sit down.
An orchid greenhouse.
White iron frame.
Green tile floor.
A yellow-painted interior gate.
Maya remembered it.
Not like a movie scene returning perfectly.
Fragments.
Wet leaves.
A woman humming.
A yellow gate she was not allowed to unlatch.
The smell of soil.
Maya called Julian.
“I’ve been there.”
He said nothing for a moment.
Then:
“That was Caroline’s greenhouse at the East Hampton property.”
The second layer of evidence came from outside the Waverly family.
Ruth’s former sister-in-law, Helen Calder, was still alive in Rhode Island.
Maya visited with Danielle.
Helen was eighty-two and impatient with everyone.
“Yes, Ruth knew who you were.”
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“Why did she keep it from me?”
“Because Caroline asked her to.”
Helen opened a metal recipe box.
Inside were postcards Caroline sent Ruth during the two years she lived as Caroline Ellison.
Nothing glamorous.
Amelia lost another tooth.
Found work at a bookstore.
She still hates peas.
Then one postcard:
Theodore’s people contacted Daniel’s cousin again. I won’t let them turn her childhood into another board meeting.
Maya asked:
“What was happening before they left?”
Helen looked at her.
“Your grandfather wanted custody.”
“Why?”
“He thought Caroline was unstable.”
“Was she?”
“She was grieving.”
Caroline’s husband, David Ellison, had died in a boating accident eight months before she disappeared.
After his death, Caroline struggled with depression.
Theodore Waverly petitioned for temporary guardianship over Amelia, arguing Caroline was unable to manage the child and large trust assets simultaneously.
Caroline saw it differently.
She believed her father had been waiting for an opportunity to take control.
“Who was right?” Maya asked.
Helen shrugged.
“Families love simple villains. Life rarely gives them one.”
Caroline did need help.
Theodore was also controlling.
Both could be true.
Helen continued.
“Theodore told Ruth he would make sure Caroline never had unrestricted access to Amelia’s trust if she kept ‘behaving irrationally.’”
Maya felt sick.
Money again.
Used as care.
Used as leverage.
Used as proof of who got to decide.
Ruth helped Caroline leave Long Island.
Not because Caroline feared prison.
Because she feared losing her daughter through a court fight she believed her father’s money could dominate.
Maya looked at the orchid ring on the secure photograph Julian had given her.
A family symbol.

Also, apparently, the last thing Caroline carried from a family she was running from.
