Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN VANESSA HAD BEEN TRYING TO REPLACE

The affair became public inside Daniel’s family.
Not nationally.
Not online.
Worse.
Sunday dinner.
His sister.
His mother.
His aunt.
People who had hugged me at my baby shower.
Eleanor wanted to postpone the conversation until after the birth.
I refused.
“If people are going to whisper, they can whisper after hearing me.”
Daniel sat beside no one.
That mattered.
I chose a chair near his sister Caroline.
Eleanor began:
“Vanessa exploited Daniel.”
I interrupted.
“No.”
Daniel looked at me.
I continued.
“She manipulated him for access. He still chose to sleep with her.”
Eleanor’s mouth tightened.
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“It’s what I mean.”
Daniel said quietly:
“Rachel’s right.”
His aunt looked horrified.
Caroline looked relieved.
The humiliation belonged partly to him now.
Good.
Then Caroline told us something.
Vanessa had contacted her months earlier.
Nothing overtly suspicious.
Lunch.
Questions about Charles.
Stories about the early company.
Caroline thought Vanessa was gathering material for the anniversary gala.
One question stood out.
Was Charles closer to Daniel or Michael?
Michael.
The uncle whose failed development triggered Charles’s diversion.
Caroline had answered:
“Daniel. Uncle Michael disappeared after everything fell apart.”
I stared.
“Disappeared?”
“Family disappeared.”
Michael Carter was alive.
Living in Arizona.
Estranged for twenty years.
Daniel had barely spoken to him since college.
Vanessa had apparently been searching not only for files.
She was mapping family fractures.
Then Caroline admitted Vanessa asked about me too.
“Whether Rachel controlled Daniel’s decisions.”
I laughed bitterly.
“What did you say?”
“That you’re the only person who can tell him he’s wrong without him getting defensive.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
For one second, the room almost felt normal.
Then Caroline continued.
“Vanessa said that sounded difficult.”
I understood.
Vanessa had not only studied access points.
She had identified obstacles.
I was one.
The strange instruction on the recording—make Rachel look unstable—made more sense.
If Daniel distrusted me, Vanessa gained more room.
If I left the house, she gained physical access.
If the affair became a marital crisis, Daniel might retreat toward the people already validating him.
Vanessa.
Potentially Thomas.
It was emotional engineering.
But why go so far?
Why not simply steal the records?
Daniel’s outside counsel found the answer in company email.
Vanessa had repeatedly attempted to convince Daniel to support selling the Calumet parcel before the scheduled closing.
She had written:
Take the win. Your dad would want this finished.
At the same time, Thomas wanted the sale delayed until his claim was recognized.
Contradiction.
When Daniel saw it, he frowned.
“She was pushing me against her father.”
Exactly.
Vanessa was no longer simply carrying out Thomas’s plan.

Somewhere along the way, she developed her own.
And I suspected it involved more than family revenge.
