Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY HAD A NAME

The security company enhanced nothing.
No miraculous audio reconstruction.
No face hidden in a reflection.
The clue came from Vanessa herself.
She called Daniel.
He put the call on speaker only after telling her I was present.
“I need to explain.”
Daniel said, “Start with the man on the recording.”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
“My father.”
Thomas Reed.
Alive.
Seventy-one.
Living in Michigan.
Daniel closed his eyes.
I felt something complicated.
Relief that the voice had a name.
Fear because the name connected everything.
“Why was he telling you to get company files?” Daniel asked.
“He wanted proof.”
“Of what?”
“That your father stole his company.”
Daniel stood.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The Carter reflex.”
“Do not talk about my father like—”
“Like what? A man?”
Daniel stopped.
Vanessa continued.
Thomas Reed had spent decades claiming Charles Carter diverted partnership money into a private project and blamed the shortfall on him.
According to Vanessa, Charles threatened to expose Thomas’s personal debts unless he accepted a discounted buyout and left Chicago.
“My dad lost everything.”
Daniel said, “My father told me yours stole from him.”
“Of course he did.”
“Then show proof.”
“That’s what I was trying to get.”
I finally spoke.
“By sleeping with my husband?”
Silence.
Then:
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
I almost admired the shamelessness.
“Four months happened accidentally?”
“No.”
“At least we agree.”
Vanessa’s voice changed.
“I was supposed to get close enough to understand the archive system.”
“And instead?”
No answer.
Daniel looked sick.
I continued.
“You started the affair because it gave you access.”
“At first.”
The words landed harder than I expected.
At first.
Meaning somewhere along the way, manipulation became personal.
That did not improve it.
Daniel asked, “Did your father tell you to attack Rachel?”
“No.”
“You were both on the recording.”
“He told me not to fight her.”
“He told you to make me look unstable,” I said.
Vanessa paused.
“He meant if you confronted me.”
“That is not better.”
Then she said something important.
“My father didn’t know I’d bring you into it.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He wanted the files. He never wanted the affair exposed.”
“Why Friday?”
Another pause.
“The Calumet property closes Friday.”
Daniel went still.
Carter & Vale was selling an old industrial parcel on Chicago’s South Side.
The property had been held in one corporate structure or another since Charles and Thomas were partners.
Sale price:
$14.8 million.
Thomas believed part of the property still represented money he had never been paid.
If it sold, tracing the history would become harder.
That explained the deadline.
Not the violence.
Not Vanessa’s willingness to use me.
But the urgency.
Then Daniel asked the question I was already thinking.
“If your father only wanted evidence, why did you need Rachel out of the house?”
May you like
Vanessa did not answer.
For the first time, I suspected Thomas Reed wasn’t the only person on that call with a private agenda.
