Chapter 10 - THE TWIST VANESSA COULDN’T EXPLAIN AWAY
The major twist arrived through Vanessa’s bank records.
Not ours.
Hers.
They became relevant after Carter & Vale filed a civil claim alleging breach of confidentiality and misuse of company information.
Discovery was limited.
Properly supervised.
Boring.
Effective.
Three payments stood out.
$40,000.
$65,000.
$110,000.
All from an LLC called Ashbury Strategic.
Thomas Reed denied knowing it.
Vanessa claimed consulting income.
The LLC traced back to Michael Carter.
Daniel’s estranged uncle.
The family secret changed shape.
Vanessa had been working for both sides.
Thomas believed his daughter was helping prove Charles cheated him.
Michael was paying Vanessa to make sure the Calumet sale closed.
Why?
Because Michael still owed Charles’s estate money.
A lot of it.
Remember the original diversion?
Charles moved partnership funds to save Michael’s failing development.
Later, Charles restored the partnership reserve using family money.
But he never forgave Michael’s debt.
He documented it as a private family loan.
The balance, with negotiated interest, was more than $3 million.
Charles’s estate had never enforced it because Eleanor wanted the family conflict buried.
The estate’s internal memo contained a condition.
When the Calumet parcel sold, part of Charles’s proceeds would be used to settle the family accounting.
That could reopen Michael’s obligation.
Michael wanted the sale completed quickly and the old partnership records kept confused enough that Thomas’s claim could be settled cheaply.
He hired Vanessa after learning she was Thomas’s daughter.
At first, she took his money because she believed she could use it to finance her father’s investigation.
Then Michael gave her another task.
Get close to Daniel.
Keep him emotionally distracted.
Discourage him from reviewing old records.
Make sure Rachel—the financially careful wife Caroline had described—lost influence.
The three earlier clues suddenly made sense.
Vanessa had searched company archives before the affair because of Thomas.
She had urged Daniel to complete the Calumet sale because of Michael.
And she had arranged for me to discover the affair because our marriage had become unstable in the wrong direction.
Daniel was ending things with her.
He had begun listening to me again.
Vanessa panicked.
If I discovered the affair privately and Daniel confessed everything, we might start comparing information.
So she staged a confrontation where I could be framed as violent.
That was why she knew when I returned from Milwaukee.
That was why she stood near the security camera.
That was why she deleted earlier clips but deliberately left the confrontation area visible.
She wanted evidence.
Just not the evidence the microphone captured.
And the unfamiliar man on the recording?
Thomas Reed.
But his instructions had been only part of the conversation.
A second recovered audio fragment from the security backup contained Vanessa after hanging up with him.
She immediately called another number.
Michael.
The camera captured only her side.
“Thomas still thinks this is about his settlement.”
Pause.
“No, Daniel doesn’t know.”
Pause.
“Rachel gets home at six. After tonight, she won’t be the problem.”
Daniel stared at the transcript.
His uncle had helped finance an operation designed to destabilize his marriage.
Thomas had sought evidence of an old betrayal.
