Chapter 12 - THE CONVERSATION NOBODY COULD CONTROL

The confrontation happened at Eleanor’s Lake Forest home.
No lawyers in the room.
All of them nearby.
Eleanor.
Daniel.
Michael.
Thomas.
Vanessa.
Me.
I almost didn’t go.
Then decided I wanted to hear what people said when they no longer had separate audiences.
Thomas looked at Michael.
“You paid my daughter?”
Michael answered:
“She took the money.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course that’s your defense.”
Thomas turned to her.
“You lied to me.”
“You raised me on your lie first.”
His face changed.
“What lie?”
“That getting the Carter files would fix your life.”
Silence.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“You hated them more than you loved anything we had.”
Thomas looked destroyed.
That did not erase what Vanessa had done.
But it explained part of her.
Michael looked toward Eleanor.
“You knew Charles owed Reed.”
Eleanor nodded.
“You knew he owed me too.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you settle it?”
“Because every settlement created another question.”
There it was.
The Carter family philosophy in one sentence.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You protected Dad.”
“I protected the company.”
“At first?”
Eleanor looked at him.
Then whispered:
“My marriage.”
Thomas laughed.
“Finally.”
I turned to Vanessa.
“What were you protecting?”
She stared at me.
“Nothing.”
“I don’t believe you.”
Her jaw tightened.
Then she looked at Daniel.
That hurt.
“I wanted him.”
There it was.
Not money.
Not history.
Not only revenge.
At some point, the affair stopped being operational.
She wanted Daniel to leave me.
When he ended the affair, she realized all the secrets she had gathered still didn’t give her what she wanted.
So she tried to create the crisis herself.
“If Rachel looked violent,” Vanessa said, “I thought Daniel would finally see her differently.”
I laughed softly.
“You tried to make my husband think I attacked you.”
“Yes.”
“You put your hands on a pregnant woman.”
“Yes.”
No apology yet.
Only admission.
Daniel asked:
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.”
I expected that answer to hurt more.
It didn’t.
Love had become irrelevant to accountability.
Then Daniel answered his own question.
“I loved you too.”
Everyone stopped.
He looked at me.
“I’m not saying that to hurt you.”
“It does.”
“I know.”
He continued anyway.
“But if I pretend Vanessa was only manipulating me, I turn myself into another Carter man who makes someone else responsible for his choices.”
That was the first time he said something I needed to hear without knowing whether it would help him.
I nodded once.
Nothing more.
Finally, Eleanor looked at everyone.
“What happens now?”
I put one hand over my stomach.
“For once?”
I looked around the room.
“Everyone stops asking what keeps the family comfortable.”
May you like
Then I turned toward the door.
“And starts asking what the truth costs.”
