Chapter 8 - The Texts on the iPad

The proof came from carelessness.

Or arrogance.

Sometimes there isn’t much difference.

Two days after Maya left, she returned to the house with Ava while Daniel was at work to collect the rest of Noah’s medication, her pump charger, and more baby clothes.

Elise had advised her to bring a witness.

Vanessa was not there either.

Maya moved fast.

No lingering.

No dramatics.

In the den, beside Daniel’s recliner, sat the family iPad they used mostly for recipes, streaming shows, and grocery orders.

A message banner flashed across the lock screen.

From Vanessa.

You need to delete the ones about timing.

Maya froze.

She did not unlock the tablet by guessing some secret password.

She didn’t have to.

It opened with Daniel’s face recognition when he picked it up every day, and he had left it active.

Ava stood beside her as Maya opened the message thread.

There they were.

Weeks of messages.

The whiteboard comments.

The lawyer consultation.

Vanessa coaching language.

Use “disoriented,” not “tired.”

Judges care about patterns.

If she leaves with the baby first, you’ll look reactive.

Then the texts from the day of the kitchen incident.

4:24 p.m. — Vanessa: She’s going upstairs.

4:25 p.m. — Daniel: Noah’s with me in the den.

4:26 p.m. — Vanessa: Good. Bring him in only after.

4:26 p.m. — Daniel: Don’t push too far.

4:27 p.m. — Vanessa: We need a real reaction today or this goes nowhere.

4:27 p.m. — Daniel: Not with the baby there.

4:28 p.m. — Vanessa: He won’t be.

Maya stopped breathing.

Then she kept scrolling.

4:29 p.m. — Daniel: Just do the blanket thing and stop.

4:29 p.m. — Vanessa: Then make sure you come in fast.

4:30 p.m. — Daniel: This feels wrong.

4:30 p.m. — Vanessa: It’s already late. If she takes him to Ava’s, you lose leverage.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a worried father improvising badly.

A timed provocation.

A plan.

Ava looked at the screen and whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Maya took photos of everything.

Then sent them immediately to Elise.

Before they left the house, Maya noticed one more message from later that evening.

Vanessa: I got the mark. Use the photos.

May you like

Daniel never answered.

That silence did not help him as much as he probably thought.
