Chapter 5 - What Daniel Was Afraid Would Happen

The fight after that did not explode.
It tightened.
Daniel admitted he had spoken to a family lawyer.
Not to “take Noah away,” he said.
Just to understand his options “if things got worse.”
Maya asked the obvious question.
“Worse according to whom?”
Daniel did not answer well.
“According to what’s been happening.”
“What’s been happening is that I gave birth six weeks ago and your stepmother follows me around writing things down.”
“That is not fair.”
“It’s accurate.”
Vanessa left the room dramatically then, which only made Maya more certain she was listening from the hallway.
Daniel finally said what he should have admitted sooner.
“You told me you were taking Noah and leaving.”
“For four days. To Ava’s.”
“And if you didn’t come back?”
Maya stared at him.
“Is that really what you think of me?”
Daniel dragged a hand through his hair.
“No. I think you’re exhausted and angry and—”
“And what?”
“Not yourself.”
Maya felt a cold, familiar sensation.
The one women feel when the truth is rearranged just enough to make them sound unreasonable for objecting.
“Not myself is a dangerous phrase, Daniel.”
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“You used a family-law office.”
He looked at her.
Finally, for the first time, something honest came through.
“I panicked.”
That was real.
“I know,” Maya said.
“But panic still counts as a choice.”
He did not disagree.
Slowly, awkwardly, the full shape emerged.
After weeks of tension, Daniel had spoken to Vanessa late one night.
He told her he was scared Maya would leave with Noah.
Vanessa told him he needed advice immediately, because “courts care about patterns.”
She found the lawyer.
She helped him prepare bullet points.
She offered to be a witness.
“I never filed anything,” Daniel said.
“Yet.”
“I was trying to protect Noah.”
“From me.”
He closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect all of us.”
That was when Maya understood the most dangerous thing about Daniel.
He could do something cruel if he convinced himself the end was safety.
Not money.
Not revenge.
Safety.
Control in the language of protection.
Maya slept with Noah in the guest room that night and locked the door.
The next morning, she texted Ava.
I might really need to come.
Ava answered within thirty seconds.
Come anytime.
Maya started packing after lunch.
May you like
Vanessa watched from the kitchen doorway and said nothing.
That silence turned out to be the loudest warning of all.
