Chapter 1 - The Blanket Under the Lid

Maya had only been upstairs for three minutes.

That was all.

Three minutes to put on a clean T-shirt after Noah spit up on her shoulder.

Three minutes while her newborn son slept in the bassinet beside the den, the one with the locking wheels Daniel insisted made the house “safer.”

Then she came back downstairs and saw Noah’s blue blanket trapped beneath the lid of the rice cooker.

The cooker sat on the kitchen counter.

Unplugged.

Cold.

But closed.

And Noah’s blanket was unmistakable.

Maya stopped so suddenly that her bare heel slid half an inch across the tile.

Vanessa stood beside the cooker with one hand resting calmly on the lid.

Vanessa Hale was fifty-six, Daniel’s stepmother, polished and controlled even in a beige blouse and dark slacks, the kind of woman who could make cruelty sound reasonable if she lowered her voice enough.

Maya looked toward the den.

The bassinet was empty.

Her heart stopped.

“Where is my baby?!”

Vanessa did not move.

“Maybe you should remember where you left him.”

Maya lunged forward and ripped the lid open.

Inside was a baby-sized bundle wrapped in Noah’s blue blanket.

For one violent, impossible second, her mind told her it was her son.

She screamed.

Then Daniel rushed into the kitchen carrying the real Noah safely against his chest.

Maya turned.

Noah blinked sleepily in his father’s arms, alive, warm, perfectly safe.

She looked back at the fake bundle in the cooker.

Towels.

Just towels.

Her scream turned into rage so fast it made her dizzy.

“You made me think my son was in there?!”

She shoved Vanessa backward into the kitchen island.

Vanessa hit the edge, straightened, and slapped Maya hard across the face.

The sound cracked through the room.

Maya staggered.

Daniel did not move fast enough.

Not nearly fast enough.

Maya stepped back in and slapped Vanessa once—hard, open-palmed, immediate.

Vanessa stumbled sideways.

Only then did Daniel act.

He crossed the room, set Noah safely into the locked bassinet several feet away, then turned and shoved Vanessa backward when she lunged toward Maya again.

“Stay away from my wife and son.”

For one second Maya thought he had ended it.

Then Vanessa touched her cheek.

And smiled.

Not shocked.

Not injured.

Satisfied.

She looked at Maya first.

Then at Daniel.

“You still think this was about the baby?”

Maya went cold.

Daniel’s face changed.

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Ask your husband why he needed everyone to see you lose control today.”

The room went silent.

Daniel would not look at Maya.

Would not look at Vanessa.

Would not look at the rice cooker.

Maya heard her own breathing.

Then she heard herself ask the question that split her life in two.

“Daniel… what did you set me up for?”
