Chapter 6 - The Setup

What happened in the kitchen had not begun there.
Maya figured that out later when she reconstructed the fifteen minutes before her scream.
At 4:10 p.m., she had fed Noah in the den.
At 4:20, Daniel carried him upstairs because he had spit up and needed a clean sleeper.
At 4:23, Vanessa asked Maya whether she wanted tea.
At 4:25, Maya went upstairs to change her shirt.
At 4:27, Vanessa texted Daniel.
Maya did not know that yet.
She only knew that when she came back down, Noah’s blanket was in the rice cooker and the bassinet was empty.
After Vanessa’s line—Ask your husband why he needed everyone to see you lose control today—Maya picked Noah up from the locked bassinet herself.
Daniel did not stop her.
Vanessa did not step closer again.
No one shouted.
That made it worse.
The house felt like a scene waiting for somebody else to arrive.
Maya took Noah into the guest room and locked the door again.
Daniel stood outside for nearly ten minutes.
“Maya, please open the door.”
No.
“Mom should not have done that.”
No.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.”
That sentence made her grip Noah tighter.
“Like what, Daniel?”
Silence.
Then:
“I just wanted you to calm down and talk.”
Maya laughed through tears.
“You put my son’s blanket in a rice cooker.”
“That was Mom’s idea.”
There it was.
Not surprise.
Not horror.
He knew.
Maya opened the door only because Ava called and she needed both hands.
She put the call on speaker.
“I’m coming,” Maya said immediately.
Ava heard something in her voice and asked no questions.
“Do you want me to drive there?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped back as if slapped.
“Ava does not need to be involved.”
Maya looked at him.
“She’s involved because you involved a lawyer.”
An hour later, Ava’s SUV pulled into the driveway.
Maya carried Noah out herself.
Daniel followed her onto the porch.
“You can’t just take him.”
Ava got out and leaned against her driver’s door.
“Actually, unless you’ve got a court order in your pocket, she probably can.”
Daniel looked stunned.
Maya kept walking.
Vanessa never came outside.
May you like
Later, Maya would understand why.
Because Vanessa was already taking photos of the marks on her own face.
