Chapter 9 - WHEN THE FAMILY LEARNED WHY THE WEDDING DISAPPEARED

Damian had to tell people the engagement was over.
His parents.
Celeste’s parents.
Friends who had already booked hotel rooms.
He kept the explanation narrow.
“Celeste interfered with communication between Lucas and Natalie and crossed a serious boundary with Lucas.”
Some people accepted that.
Others wanted details.
Celeste supplied them.
Her version circulated quickly.
Natalie had been unstable.
Damian had once wanted distance.
Celeste had simply maintained the boundary Damian requested.
The burned photograph became “one terrible emotional mistake.”
The Sunday calls became “supporting a woman who wasn’t ready to return.”
There was enough truth in each sentence to make the story dangerous.
Damian’s mother called.
“Did you ask Celeste to manage Natalie’s contact?”
“At the beginning.”
“Then this isn’t entirely on her.”
“I know.”
His mother went silent.
She had expected resistance.
Damian continued.
“I gave her authority I shouldn’t have given. She later lied about how Natalie was doing and withheld requests for contact.”
“That’s different.”
“Yes.”
Damian did not need to be innocent for Celeste to be responsible.
That became his position.
Meanwhile, Natalie’s return moved through professionals rather than family opinion.
She met with Lucas’s therapist.
Provided treatment records voluntarily where appropriate.
Established consistent housing and employment.
No one declared her instantly restored as a full-time parent.
The first in-person meeting with Lucas happened at a family therapy center.
Damian waited outside.
Forty minutes later Lucas came running into the lobby holding a paper airplane.
“Mom remembers how to make the good ones.”
Damian smiled.
Then Natalie appeared.
For the first time in almost a year they stood face-to-face.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
No embrace.
No romantic music.
Two parents with too much history.
Natalie looked at him.
“Thank you for bringing him.”
“He wanted to come.”
“I know.”
She hesitated.
“Celeste called me yesterday.”
Damian’s expression changed.
“What did she want?”
“She asked me not to destroy your life.”
Damian almost laughed.
Natalie did not.
May you like
“She said there’s something you still don’t know.”
And just as Damian thought the central lie had finally been exposed, another unanswered piece surfaced.
