Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE AFTER THE TRUTH

Damian apologized to Natalie.

Not for Celeste.

For himself.

They met at a coffee shop in Wheaton after Lucas’s therapy appointment.

“I gave her too much control.”

Natalie looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I wrote that text.”

“Yes.”

“I was angry.”

“I know.”

“You still should have contacted me directly.”

“I tried.”

Damian nodded.

That was the part he had no answer for.

Natalie stirred her coffee.

“I was ashamed.”

He looked up.

“I let Celeste be the middle because talking to you meant facing what I’d done to our marriage.”

Neither of them escaped cleanly.

Natalie had entered treatment for good reasons.

But before treatment, she had frightened Lucas more than once with emotional unpredictability.

She had broken promises.

Missed school pickup.

Drunk too much.

Damian’s fear had not appeared from nowhere.

His mistake was allowing legitimate caution to become silence.

Natalie’s mistake was accepting an intermediary long after direct accountability was necessary.

Celeste’s mistake was turning both of their weaknesses into space for herself.

Lucas became angry with everyone.

He refused one scheduled call with Natalie.

Then demanded another the next day.

He asked Damian whether he would marry someone else.

Damian said no.

Then corrected himself.

“Not anytime soon.”

Lucas asked:

“Can Mom come home?”

Damian replied:

“Not right now.”

“Ever?”

“I don’t know.”

Lucas hated that answer.

Damian kept giving it when it was true.

At school, Lucas drew a family picture with Damian on one side and Natalie on the other.

Celeste was not included.

His teacher mentioned it gently.

Damian felt relief.

Then guilt for feeling relieved.

The family therapist reminded him:

“Lucas does not owe adults balanced representation.”

Damian wrote that sentence down.

For years he had managed everyone’s emotions.

Now his job was simpler.

Protect his son.
