Chapter 12 - WHY CELESTE BURNED THE PHOTOGRAPH

The fireplace incident still had one unanswered question.

Why that night?

Why the photograph?

Celeste finally explained during her last individual closure session with Damian present.

Lucas had found a package.

Natalie’s latest one.

Celeste had brought it to the house intending to give it to Damian.

For the first time.

Inside was a letter stating Natalie had reached one year sober.

She had been promoted at the outpatient clinic where she now worked.

She was ready to petition for a formal parenting schedule if Damian agreed.

Celeste sat in her car for twenty minutes holding the envelope.

Then took it home.

She never delivered it.

That Sunday Natalie called.

Celeste told her:

“I’ll tell him.”

She did not.

Two days later Lucas found the old photograph while Celeste was helping organize the family room.

He hugged it and said:

“When Mom comes back, maybe she can live here too.”

Celeste snapped.

Not because of the photograph.

Because the fantasy exposed what she feared.

There was no version of Natalie returning in which Celeste remained unquestioned at the center of the family.

“I wanted him to stop waiting for her.”

Damian stared.

“So you told him she was dead.”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“You knew she had just reached a year sober.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she wanted to see him.”

“Yes.”

“You burned her picture anyway.”

“Yes.”

No justification followed.

That mattered.

Celeste finally said:

“I loved you.”

Damian’s expression did not change.

“I believe you.”

She looked surprised.

He continued.

“That’s what makes this worse.”

Love had not prevented the betrayal.

It had become the excuse Celeste used to protect the place she wanted in their lives.

Damian stood.

There was nothing left to investigate between them.

Only consequences.
