Chapter 14 - THE LAST REQUEST CELESTE MADE

Four months after the engagement ended, Celeste emailed Damian.
One paragraph.
I’m not asking you to forgive me. I would like to apologize to Lucas someday if his therapist believes it would help him. If the answer is no, I will accept it.
Damian did not answer immediately.
Old Damian would have.
He would have wanted the issue settled.
New Damian brought the email to Lucas’s therapist.
The therapist asked:
“What does Lucas want?”
Nobody had asked yet.
So Damian did.
Not by showing him the email.
By asking generally:
“If Celeste wanted to say sorry someday, would you want to hear it?”
Lucas’s face hardened.
“No.”
Damian nodded.
“Okay.”
“Is she coming back?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Not to live here.”
Lucas relaxed slightly.
Then asked:
“Can I change my mind later?”
“Yes.”
That was the answer.
Damian emailed Celeste:
Not now. If Lucas wants contact later, I will let you know. Please do not reach out to him directly.
Celeste replied:
Understood.
No argument.
No guilt.
No demand.
Damian stared at the message.
If she had respected boundaries this cleanly a year earlier, their lives might have been entirely different.
But accountability arrived after damage.
It could not retroactively become prevention.
That evening Natalie came to pick Lucas up for dinner.
She waited at the front door.
She no longer walked in automatically.
Damian noticed the irony.
The woman he once feared would destabilize every boundary was now respecting them more carefully than anyone.
Lucas ran downstairs holding the restored photograph.
“Mom!”
Natalie smiled.
“Ready?”
He nodded.
At the doorway he turned.
“Dad, can Mom come to my school concert?”
Damian looked at Natalie.
She did not answer for him.
“Yes.”
Lucas grinned.
Then ran toward the car.
Natalie remained on the porch.
“Thank you.”
Damian shook his head.
“He asked.”
May you like
“I know.”
For once, the adults were allowing the child’s relationship to belong to him.
