My father refused to let me attend my own medical school graduation because my stepmother wanted my VIP ticket for her daughter. Clara recognized the signature.

It came from a letter she had signed eighteen months earlier, allowing Hale Construction to mention its temporary storage donation in a company newsletter.

Someone had lifted the signature from that letter and placed it on the hospital proposal.

Robert denied doing it.

He said the marketing department reused approved material.

Hale Construction’s marketing department consisted of Haley and a freelance graphic designer who worked ten hours a week.

The proposal also included financial figures that only someone with access to Second Shift’s internal reports could have known.

Patient visits.

Volunteer hours.

The percentage of patients referred for follow-up care.

Clara contacted the clinic’s faculty adviser, Dr. Samuel Levin.

He sounded ashamed before she finished explaining.

Robert had approached him six months earlier with the $250,000 pledge. Dr. Levin shared preliminary program data so the company could prepare donor materials.

“He said you approved it,” Dr. Levin told her.

“Did you ask me?”

“I thought your father was trying to surprise you at graduation.”

The surprise had been carefully designed.

A generous father.

A talented second daughter.

A family company committed to community health.

Clara was meant to stand beside them, grateful enough not to inspect the details.

Dr. Levin admitted something else.

Hale Construction had invoiced the clinic for storage, transportation, and administrative consulting during the previous year. The charges were modest enough to escape attention individually.

Together, they totaled $46,800.

Clara had believed the company donated the storage space.

Dr. Levin believed Clara had approved the invoices.

Haley had processed them through an outside nonprofit account called Hale Community Partners.

When Clara asked who controlled that account, Dr. Levin sent her the incorporation record.

Clara’s name appeared beneath theirs as medical adviser.

She had never joined the organization.
