Chapter 1 - THE DAUGHTER LEFT IN THE RAIN

Robert Hale’s fingers crushed Clara’s upper arm as he shoved her away from the bronze doors.
Rain struck the stone steps of Ohio State’s medical education building hard enough to splash against her blue scrubs. Her green graduation gown hung open, soaked at the hem.
“Stay out,” Robert said. “You’ll spoil Haley’s moment.”
Clara slipped and caught the railing before her knee hit the pavement. Robert jerked her upright, less to help her than to keep her from making a scene.
Behind him, Diane stood inside the doorway in a cream coat, one hand braced against the door.
“Nobody came for you,” she said.
Haley waited beneath the awning in a pink dress, holding Clara’s gold-edged VIP pass between two manicured fingers.
Clara stared at it.
She had given that pass to Robert three weeks earlier because every graduating medical student received only one invitation to the private reception before commencement. Clara had wanted her father there when the university announced the recipient of the Dean’s Humanism Medal.
Robert had handed it to Haley instead.
Haley lifted the badge toward the light.
“Your ticket finally made me important.”
Clara’s fear went strangely quiet.
She looked through the glass doors at the reception beyond them. Faculty members stood near white-clothed tables. Hospital trustees checked their watches. At the center of the room, an empty display board waited beside a covered easel.
“Ask who they’re waiting for,” Clara said.
Robert followed her gaze.
Associate Dean Priya Shah appeared inside the lobby, searching the crowd. When she saw Clara outside in the rain, her expression changed.
She opened the door.
“Dr. Hale, we’ve delayed the presentation. The trustees are waiting for you.”
May you like
Robert released Clara’s arm.
For the first time that morning, Haley lowered the VIP pass.
