Chapter 3 - THE NAME UNDER CLARA’S WORK
The program described Second Shift as a partnership between Ohio State medical students and Hale Commercial Construction.
It credited Haley with “developing the clinic’s community engagement model.”
Clara read the sentence twice.
The company had provided storage space for donated examination tables during the clinic’s first year. Robert called it his contribution. Clara had thanked him publicly.
She had never authorized the company to claim ownership of the clinic.
Robert reached for the program.
“This is marketing language.”
“It’s a lie.”
“It’s one paragraph.”
“It has her face over my work.”
Haley folded her arms. “I helped with donor calls.”
“You emailed three restaurants asking for bottled water.”
“At least I showed up.”
Clara looked at her stepsister.
That was the family’s favorite distortion. A small act became a sacrifice when Haley performed it. Years of work became selfish ambition when Clara did.
Dr. Shah explained that the university advancement office had received a corporate sponsorship proposal from Hale Construction. The proposal claimed the company had funded Second Shift for three years and that Haley served as its founding operations director.
The firm had pledged $250,000 toward a future permanent clinic.
No payment had arrived.
Clara’s father had used the pledge to obtain invitations, donor meetings, and recognition in the commencement materials.
“Why wasn’t I told?” Clara asked.
Dr. Shah hesitated.
Because Clara’s faculty adviser believed Robert was still arranging the money.
Because the clinic needed it.
Because nobody wanted to embarrass a graduating student over her father’s late contribution.
Good intentions had given the lie time to grow.
Security asked whether Clara wanted to file a report about being shoved.
Robert stared at her.
“Don’t turn a family argument into something permanent.”
Clara touched the marks on her arm.
“You made it permanent when you put her name on my clinic.”
She gave security a factual statement.
Then she walked toward the robing room, knowing she might miss the processional but refusing to miss her own graduation.
Before she left, Dr. Shah handed her a second document.
