Chapter 8 - THE DECISION THAT ENDED THE FAMILY BUSINESS AS THEY KNEW IT

Claire filed for divorce.

The legal separation had been a protective first step. The audit, forged guarantee and planned confinement removed any reason to preserve the marriage while she waited for Trent to explain himself.

Serena also sought temporary exclusive possession of the Brentwood house, preservation of marital assets and future supervised contact between Trent and the baby after birth until the criminal and custody evaluations were complete.

The filing became public record.

Walker & Rowe’s largest bank froze further draws and required an independent restructuring officer before considering emergency credit. Several clients demanded proof their deposits remained available.

Richard called a company meeting and told employees the business might close because Claire “chose destruction over family.”

Nicole stood at the back of the warehouse.

For the first time, she contradicted him publicly.

“The company is short because Dad and Trent moved deposits into Cumberland,” she said.

Richard ordered security to remove her.

The security supervisor had worked with Nicole for nine years. He refused.

By afternoon, Nicole was terminated.

Her health insurance for Evan would end at the close of the month.

Cooperation now had a measurable cost.

Claire helped her find information about continuation coverage but did not offer money. Their relationship was not repaired, and Claire would not turn guilt into another form of dependency.

Walker & Rowe entered a court-supervised restructuring process requested by its bank and several clients. It was not an instant bankruptcy or liquidation. The officer reviewed active projects, payroll, customer deposits and equipment.

Some jobs could be completed.

Others would need refunds or claims against the company’s bond.

Cumberland’s land would likely be sold at a loss.

Richard’s personal guarantee placed his retirement home at risk.

Helen blamed Nicole.

Trent blamed Claire.

Neither blamed the decision to gamble customer deposits on undeveloped land.

That evening, Trent sent a message through the court-approved communication system.

You are killing the business my father built.

Claire wrote:

Your father put the business at risk. You assaulted me to make me cover it.

He responded:

You would have gotten the money back.

Claire stared at the sentence.

It revealed the hidden priority more clearly than any confession.

Trent still believed taking something was harmless if he planned to replace it before the owner noticed.

Money.

Authority.

Safety.

Her body.

Before Claire could close the application, a second message arrived.

Nicole planned the whole rescue. Ask her why she waited until the stick was raised.

The accusation was designed to fracture the only witness helping Claire.

It worked enough that she asked Serena to arrange another meeting.
